I'm not sure if it's his immense knowledge, his passion, his 'daft' sense of humour, his logical way of explaining things, his genuine personality or his years of experience that makes Mr Agar such a good teacher. Most probably a combination of everything. But I bet there's one thing he doesn't know, and that's the amount of people all round the world that he has helped. Where I live in Lancashire England there are no courses for adults to specifically learn developing and darkroom printing. Mr Agar has taught me so much, and he's always there if I want a refresher. From this little corner of the UK, a big thank you.

This entire series of darkroom videos has been the most helpful in learning the darkroom on my own. Most everything I have done is self taught because the facility that I print in is run by people who aren't nearly as enthusiastic as this guy. But Prof. Agar has taught me so much! I finally nailed a show print that I have been working for a long time! I hope to have my own darkroom in my home someday! :) Thanks again for these videos! Does Prof Agar have a web portfolio??

TRAVISxAARON Awesome Travis!! Would love to see your print! So glad you've found these videos beneficial! Home darkrooms do not have to be elaborate to produce great results. I hope to do a video on different setups, such as minimal equipment and supplies and workarounds, in the near future. Mr. Agar has a website, www.willagar.com. Good luck to you!! Thank you so much! :)

Such an enjoyable series of videos! There are many here on youtube that cover darkroom techniques but none like these. After years of wishing I had my own darkroom, I'm finally putting my own together and these are immensely helpful.

Professor Agar says: Enlarging Lenses match the film format so 35mm film needs a 50mm lens, medium format films needs an 80mm lens and large format film needs at least a 135mm lens. Hope this helps!! Good luck with your photography!

I love how you still reply to posts on your Channel even a week ago. :D Photography is my Fave Subject and hobby, I still have my own Dark Room, Just an Enlarger, Measuring Jug, Paint Trays, Film Tub and Dark Bag. Its very basic. lol I use to finish processing my images and just stick the wet prints to the tiles in the bathroom, most of them stayed in place until I took them, some would fall. I have now got a real Safe Light, but I did at some point use a Red Lamp (Light Bulb for non electritions) in the socket of my bedroom's light fitting. (Need to make sure its completely red/painted in heat resistant red paint, but it may have some effect on exposure. ie greying whites). Photography doesn't haft to be too expensive, get your gear a little at a time and experiment as you go Peoples. :D I hope Film Photography last forever. Thank you for your videos. Neil. :D

Trangent They only stay there for like 15 - 30 mins while the image side dries if I'm doing a few. If I print the entire film or a lot of prints, them I set up my Dark Room properly and string washing line up. Sometimes the backs are still damp, so its not a good idea to pile them straight away. The first memory of being in a Dark Room was at School in the Leavers Centre. Seeing that first print appear by 'Magic', hooked me. I'm going to get back into the Dark Room again. I quite happy there are places on the Web that still stock Film and Chemistry. I mostly stopped when the Photo Shops like Kent Photo and Jessops closed down or stopped selling the paper/chemistry. Thanks for the Vids and the inspiration to pick up again. :D

NBF27 I bet your photos looked cool hanging on the wall like that! I'm glad you are inspired to get back into B&W photography!! Digital makes things easier, but the entire experience of setting up a shot and seeing it through to the end is lost when shooting digitally. I recently saw an amazing show by the late Vivian Maier (www.vivianmaier.com) at the Minneapolis Photo Center (www.mplsphotocenter.com/exhibits/vivian-maier-gallery.php). It is really awesome to see a photographer's world through their B&W photographs!! Good luck to you!

Since your video is very helpful and informative, I felt free to ask you about a problem I am facing. I recently got a Seagull DF-200A. Most Seagull cameras has the same features as Milonta. I used a Fuji 200/36 film. After I had my film developed from a nearby professional studio, there were no images on my film. It is just blank and transparent. Is there anything wrong with my camera or was it a damaged film? The shutter of my Seagull works fine but there is a little bit of fungus in the lens and some dusts on the mirror. The camera works fine mechanically but I just could not figure out the problem that I had to face with the film development. I set the aperture to 8 and shutter speed to 125 during day and 60 during night. It was the first and the last time I developed a film that I used in my Seagull. Please help me out Sir and let me know all the possible errors that may occur with my camera or film. I will be glad to appreciate your kindness. Thank You.
@Trangent
@Trangent 10 жыл бұрын
Professor Agar says: "If a student showed me a blank film, it is usually because the film did not pass through the camera. I always make sure the film is well attached on the take-up side, both the top and bottom of the film, and make sure the gear's teeth are poking through the film sprockets. I slightly tighten the film in the cassette on the left side. After closing the back of the camera, I shoot off about 3 images, making sure the film rewind, on the top left-side of the camera, moves along with the film that is coming out. If not, I re-open to check out what is amiss. Also, you always need to follow the light meter, either in the camera or handheld, for accurate exposures." Hope this helps!

Rule of thumb my dad taught me: emulsion to emulsion." The glass holds the negatives flat so they don't appear out of focus when printed. Hope this helps you!! Good luck making your first print!! :))

Hello Trangent.Sorry to bother you with unrelated question. What is your experience of how quickly positive developer exhausts. I print now 30x40 and 40x50 fiber and it goes rather quick (sorry for the metric measures). Am I doing sthg wrong? After like 10 prints of 30x40 it goes really slow. Any thoughts on that? Many thanks in advance.

After 45+ years of shooting film, I finally made my first contact prints! It took me a while because the first prints were all black. I discovered a problem with my "safe light" (8w red LED bulb at a distance of 8 ft). What kind of safe light is recommended and how far should it be from the working area? Thanks

+irishvoyageur Professor Agar says, "I have several safelights in my darkroom ceiling mounted. Try this link from B&H photo www.bhphotovideo.com/c/buy/Safelights/ci/534/N/4077265226." Good luck!!

When you put the film on the paper, is the film emulsion side down or up?
@Trangent
@Trangent 3 жыл бұрын
Professor Agar says, "Film is always proofed or printed face down or dull side down and shiny side up. As my father taught me 'emulsion to emulsion' meaning the emulsion side or dull side always faces the emulsion side of the paper." Hope this helps!! Have you seen any of our newer videos? We're having a contest and encourage you to enter: kzbin.info/www/bejne/f4HFhGqBZbygnNk, kzbin.info/www/bejne/h6vcl5qwZdOfZrM, and kzbin.info/www/bejne/nomtiniod5dljLs. Homs86 That's wonderful! A small dark room with running water and a place to hang is all you need. A lot of people use a bathroom for a darkroom in their homes. I noticed you may have been German by the email I got from KZbin. The heading and link to your comment were in German. It's so awesome to be able to communicate worldwide!! Viel Glück mit deiner Dunkelkammer! Bleib dran!

How would proofing work trying to make color photos? Is the process still the same or is there more to it?
@Trangent
@Trangent 7 жыл бұрын
+Sovann Nile Color is the same process with different chemicals and equipment and can be more expensive to get into. Professor Agar says that these days he would stick the negative on a scanner, scan and save it, and print digitally. Thanks for watching! :))

Hey, In The Last Episode Where He Talked About Having To Put Film On The Reel In "Darkness"? Can You Do This With The Special Red Light?
@RandellJohn
@RandellJohn 8 жыл бұрын
+Bailey Lucas Hi Bailey. No when you load film it has to be in total darkness. Use a changing bag, it's a much easier way to control light than trying to get a totally blacked out room. The printing process is a little more forgiving when it comes to actually developing onto paper. The paper itself is not able to see 'Red Light', whereas your roll film will be damaged if it's exposed to any colour light.
@Trangent
@Trangent 8 жыл бұрын
+Randell John Thanks Randell! You are correct! It should be done in complete darkness. I've never tried the changing bag--just a completely dark room. Scary!!!

I'm guessing that there is some difference between colour film and black and white that makes developing it easier. and they don't see any money in developing black and white

andrewford80 why don't they do it in the shops then? Still seems too complicated for me
@andrewford80
@andrewford80 8 жыл бұрын
+Ryan Heath well there's no money in it. Some shops still do it but seeing a lot of people who are interested in black and white do there own, the market is very small. Plenty of good videos on KZbin about developing film. Once you have a tank and some chemicals, you're away!
