Phil Harding helps cooper Jim Newlands make a traditional timber cask. Perhaps Phil should start his own show!
#TimeTeam #PhilHarding #HistoricCarpentry

Close to where I live, there is a grouping of old buildings which is called the "beehive". One of them was where a cooper made barrels. For many years, an event was held there called the Apple Butter Festival. Huge cauldrons would steam with the ingredients used to make this wonderfully tasty confection. Here's a little factoid. To keep the ingredients from sticking to the bottom of the cauldron, a few silver dollars would be placed at it's bottom.

The most important detail was left out. Wood easily transports liquids vertically, up and down through channels (capillaries) facilitating vertical growth, but also has transportation channels horizontally (facilitating to grow thicker, stronger). Through dry wood, such channels would lead liquids away. So coopers cut/sawed the staves for their barrels in a way that this problem would not play out. The longitudinal capillaries are in and along the outer wall in the longitudinal direction of the staves. They start on the outside and end on the outside. That should not facilitate leakage or "bleeding". I would argue that the cutting - where the video starts - of wood in the inside middle of the staves creates an opening, though. If you can make the staves a bit thinner and only steam/bend them into shape, that potential problem would not exist anymore. The problem is in the circumference where the horizontal/radial capillaries in the wood are. Cutting the wood so as to keep these capillaries parallel to the circumference would mean that the capillaries have their open ends where the staves meet. The result is that liquid seeping between the staves will go into the capillaries and the wood will swell, causing the barrel to become even more "waterproof". Cut the staves 90 degrees rotated and the tree's horizontal/radial capillaries run inside/out through the staves. In my language we have a separate word for staves and if something falls into pieces we could say it "falls into staves".

@J Sev - yes, precisely. The radial horizontal capillaries in the tree. If you look at the top of the staves, you can see if the wood was cut correctly. The year ring sections need to run inside out so the radial capillaries run along the circumference. As I am following a YT channel that rebuilds an over 100 years old sailing yacht (Tally Ho), I was wondering if the shipwrights of the day would actually cut the timbers in a way that takes this into account.

@@nickrich56 - Funny how 500 years of genetic loading by teachers, academicians and preachers can lead to remembering and passing on these kind of things. That was decades ago when i watch a cooper's craft demonstration. So assuming to be "far from coopers" in a way, I discovered recently that, "who do you think you are" on a personal level, a great-great ancestor her family name was (in my language) "cooper". I know only one thing about her: she was not funny.

That ending made me think of the scene from the movie "Braveheart" where Friar Tuck is talking about grain and beer. "....which any fool can eat but for which God intended a more divine means of consumption. Beer!!"

I would think a show with Phil would be very entertaining. Without Tony of course.

Tony outside of Time Team is alright, you are falling for his character in the show as being him. He played an annoying character who knew diddly squat about archeology and had to ask all the stupid questions. Other shows he isn't annoying in at all, like Britain's Ancient Tracks, he actually loves history and archeology and takes it seriously. His title was presenter but his real job was channeling the audience who knew nothing about archeology and ask their question in a way they would ask. Tony, Phil, and Mick were friends before Time Team and remained friends after, so there is that, if he was a bad as his character neither Phil or Mick would sit down for a pint with him but they did. I for one would love to see a show with Phil and Tony, let their banter be real but also let Tony be himself... lord knows producers can't make Phil not be himself.
