Great job!! I especially liked the strap attachment technique to the hull -- no snaps or clips attached to the boat anywhere. Very clean job putting the tent together. Wayfarers are great boats!

I really like the strap around the hull as a pull down, I've been dreaming of a tent on my Drascombe but don't feel I have enough gunnal to put buttons or hooks in to make hold downs. This looks like an elegant solution that takes only a little more time to set up but results in no having to put any new hardware into the boats hull. Thanks for sharing this video!

Can you run a tight line under the gunnel?

I use 3" suction cups rated for 30 lbs pull. Kept cover in place up to 45 MPH winds. You must clean attachment spots and suction cups of salt and dirt. You get 4 for 15 bucks.

Brilliant solution. I too am in the middle of a boat build, i have been fidgeting with how NOT to make the boom tent into a boondoggle of bits and pieces. I knew the solution had to have the canvas go outside the gunwales. Your solution solves lots of design problems without compromising the hull or deck. Well done.

Great Video and comments below. Looking to sew one for my wayfarer also.I had a question regarding the tent design - when moored to a buoy or at anchor, do you find that your boat swings over a wide range due to windage on the front part of the tent conpared to a tent that where the front (slanted) part is further back - around where the mast is seated as opposed to from the bow ?

I dont keep it on a mooring. When anchored out I often have bow and stern anchors set so swing in not an issue. The boat does want to wander though. When I do want it to swing, I often set a small stern anchor with just a few few more scope then needed to reach the bottom. This acts more like a drag to slow the swing down and dampen it. I have also experimented with stern-to anchoring with just a little roller furled jib out to act as a riding sail. It worked well- much less swinging, though you do get more wave slap on the bottom of the boat.

Mildew stains? Polypropylene fabric has a nice hand but doesn't mildew or shrink.

Hi, What did you pay for the canvas?

Thankyou for the video, lots of good ideas and advice in there. Do you leave the strap that goes round the hull attached all the time? I am trying to imagine how to get it around the boat while you are on the water.

During cruising season I tend to leave it on tensioned. When just day sailing I take it off and store it. I can put the strap on from inside the boat- I've got quick connect shackles on the back (two strong "bow eyes" are in my transom) the strap is then run around the boat including the bow eye on the stem (have to lay on the foredeck to do this)- I have a midship support (right now just a light line that hangs over the side but im putting a short piece of webbing screwed to the hull soon.) that keeps the strap from sagging when loose. The strap is actually in two pieces that boat attach at the stern . The short piece is on on port ends about midships where I have a web adjusting buckle to tension the strap. www.sailrite.com/Star-Webbing-Adjuster-1-by-Suncor. It'a easier to put the tent up loosely, then snug but the belt around the boat, then the straps on the inside.

@@SATSelectChoice Thankyou again! I have had the canvas for a while but have been stuck trying to work out how best to tackle the task. Thanks to your video and explanation, I am inspired to start cutting and sewing. Much appreciated!

Hi Dan great video . Could you clarify something for me.At 6.06 there is a view of the side tension straps for the tent.Do these just come down, wrap around the strop and then up to click into the catch : or do they come back up through a sewn "tube" that is on the tent fabric [this keeps the tent against the side of the boat ]

The strap is apx 30" long and sewn into the bottom of the tent (with reinforcement patch). It wraps around the strap that goes around the entire boat. It is then brought up the inside of the tent (no tube) and attached then tensioned on the other half of the buckle sewn into the tent apx 24" up from the bottom. See link in description for setting the tent up- this might make it even more clear.

What you may be confused by at 6:06 is the bottom reinforcement patch showing. The strap goes down from there, around the strap then back up the inside- here it is over the top half of that bottom patch.

Hi Dan,Are the tent tension straps sewn to BOTH the tent fabric and the triangular tension piece? Or just the triangular tension piece in the top adjuster leaving the tent fabric unhindered ? Wow that sounds complicated ! hope you can pick the bones out of my question .Thanks for your time

One end of the strap is secured to the bottom edge of the tent and reinforced with a triangular path to distribute the load. The other end of the strap has one half of a buckle (the adjustable half). The other half of the buckle is sewn into the tent about 16" up from the bottom of the tent (on the inside) with a small loop of strap sewn in with a reinforcement patch to spread the load on that end. The loose strap attached on the bottom is run through the strap around the hull then back up inside the tent and buckled to the attachment point 16" up the tent. After all are attached the straps are pulled tight in the buckles to tension the tent.

Looks great, well done! I was wondering what weight of canvas you used? I would have thought 6 or 8oz would work?

Shrinkage issues? Roger Barnes' tent shrinks 6" then stretches 6" !
@SATSelectChoice
@SATSelectChoice Жыл бұрын
the canvas was preshrunk. I allowed an addtional 3% per the sellers recomendaiton. it has shrunk a little more over the years, but this design can absorb these changes easily- lower the boom an inch or two, slide the front piece back an inch or two.
