Another excellent project Kenny, you are a true craftsman and that thing is bombproof! lol Especially liked the dovetail construction. The only thing I might have done additionally is to rout a 1/4" deep groove for the tambour to rest in when the box was closed. Really enjoy your attention to detail with everything- Thank you for posting this awesome piece of counter furniture.

AWESOME PROJECT liked and subscribed. Really enjoy your teaching methods. One thing I liked a Lot was the fact that yes , you did screw up a couple of times, BUT you showed it and took responsibility for it, and then showed us how to fix them and work around a design flaw. A good carpenter can always cover up or fix their mistakes 🤫

Glad to hear that you liked the show Mr B. I find that there are more and more woodworking channels out there that put forth the impression that everything is perfect and there are never any mistakes to be had. As far as I am concerned, this forms an unrealistic and unobtainable goal for the people watching the show and just makes them feel that they could never do something like that. Everyone makes mistakes. I've been woodworking for over 40 years (started when I was 10) and I still make mistakes. I have no problem showing them and by doing that, I hope to demonstrate that no matter how good you are, you can always make a mistake. It's nothing to worry about and it can be a real lesson in problem solving. It's a win/win. Thanks for tuning in and for the kind words on the show. I truly appreciate it.

Ken, I really liked this project. The design was very pleasing and came out looking very traditional. I am curious about the finish. It seems as though you would have to be quite particular so as not to interfere with the smooth operation of the joints in the tambour. Lacquer perhaps? Again, a very nice project and one you should be very proud of. Your friend, Paul / paulsmessyworkshop
@acutabove_woodworkings
@acutabove_woodworkings 7 жыл бұрын
Paul, I'm considering a sanding sealer and then multiple coats of varnish for this one. I think there is enough slack and play in the tambour to allow for whatever finish you wish without worrying about it interfering with its functionality. I guess we will find out when I apply the finish. Don't worry, I will be sure to report what I find. Thanks for tuning in.

Thanks for the compliment on the show Philip. Your are definitely correct about the wax. When it comes to wood on wood and the friction that it causes, a little candle wax is your best friend. A spray silicone lubricant also works but wax is less messy. Thanks for chiming in with your suggestion.

Man, this has been a great project and it looks wonderful. I have a bunch of questions. What finish are you going to use; how many total hours did you spend on the build; and, how much weight have you lost/how much more do you need to lose? I hope you and the misses had a great Easter. Have you gone back to work or were you put on disability? If you wish, concerning the questions, you can just say that it's none of my business and let it go at that. We will still be friends. God Bless my friend.

ha ha ha ha ha ha ha. I would never tell you to mind your own business Frank. I haven't decided on the finish of this project yet and to tell you the truth, it is still sitting in the house unfinished. I'm thinking a grain filler to smooth out the oak and then multiple coats of varnish to seal everything in and finish it off. As for the hours, I didn't track this one for some odd reason. I guess I didn't expect it to take as long as what it did. If I were to take an educated guess, based on filming and how many episodes of the show it took up, I would have to say this was a 40 hour project. That includes the milling and making of the tambour of course. There was a lot of waiting around for the glue to dry etc so the actual work time was probably a little less. This video was filmed back in February (my show if pre-recorded) and at the time, I had lost 43 pounds. I've lost another 11 since then for a total of 54 pounds. I'm not on a diet but the restrictions and the rehabilitation program keep me active and losing weight just happens. I have no goals as far as how much weight I want to lose. My body will level out where it wants to be I guess. I've been back to work for months. Thanks for tuning in Frank. It's always great to hear from you.

Hey Kenny; Just found your site about a month ago and I just finished making the breadbox. By the way, your instructions are great. I have a question, Do I need to vent the box somehow? A friend of mine said that the bread would mold quickly without any ventilation. Thanks for the help. Again great videos and instructions.
@acutabove_woodworkings
@acutabove_woodworkings 5 жыл бұрын
Hello Daniel. Thank you for contacting me. How strange that two questions about this exact topic on this exact show came through at the exact time. No matter, I will do my best to answer the question. My breadbox has no vent holes whatsoever as I feel that the loose connection of the tambour as well as the non-airtight nature of this project allows enough ventilation to not sufficient for the bread stored within. However, if you are worried about the ventilation and worry about bread going mouldy too quickly, you can always incorporate a few 3/4" diameter holes in the backboard of the breadbox right under the top lip of the lid. This will allow the warmer air inside to escape and should alleviate your worries of mould on the bread. I would suggest that the next time you are at a store that sells bread boxes, have a look at the commercial ones and I would venture to say that you would be hard pressed to find one with vent holes. However, there is absolutely no harm at all in cutting some into your project if you are concerned. Thank you so much for the kind words on the show and thank you so much for tuning in and taking the time to leave a comment. I truly appreciate the support.

Hi Kenny, What type of wood could I use to make a bread box and what kind of finishes should I put on it. Also would the same apply for cutting boards. Thanks for the advice... and by the way great stuff !
@acutabove_woodworkings
@acutabove_woodworkings 5 жыл бұрын
Hi there Wade. Thanks for contacting me. The type of wood that you use for a breadbox really isn't that important but I would suggest a hardwood for longevity sake. Some along the lines of oak (as I used) or maple, walnut, cherry, mahogany. Any hardwood that will stand the test of time and take some abuse as the breadbox will get used all the time. The finish should be durable and varnish is always a great choice. I would suggest several coats with light sanding (400 grit or higher) in between coats. As for the cutting boards, you want a hardwood that is tight grained. Maple or walnut are perfect for these as is cherry. You want to avoid deeper grained woods like oak for a cutting board as it give areas for bacteria to rest and grow. The coating for the cutting board should be a food safe mixture of wax and mineral oil and if you aren't sure how to make that, you can find a tutorial on my show here. kzbin.info/www/bejne/d3mVaJWca6afea8 I hope this help you out and if you have any other questions, please don't hesitate to ask. I would be more than happy to help if I can. Thank you for tuning in to the show. I appreciate it.

Thank you so much for the kind words on the show Ken. You didn't miss it about the finish. I haven't decided yet and to date, this project is still bare wood. I was thinking a sanding sealer and then multiple coats of varnish to seal it in. I really dislike the finishing part so I've been procrastinating on it. ha ha ha ha ha ha. As far as the name Kennyearrings, you may have notice that I have a couple of earrings. Years ago, I had many many more and one day, someone called me Kenny Earrings and she continued to call me that for years and years. When I started a youtube channel, it wasn't meant to be a woodworking channel and I just called it my nickname and the name has been the same since then. I wonder if I can change it. There has been a debate for years as to whether or not a biscuit or a dowel actually increases the strength of a butt joint. In my personal experience, I have never had a butt joint let go with, or without biscuits. I do find however, that the biscuits or dowels help immensely with the alignment of the pieces being glued together. Thanks for tuning in and for taking the time to leave me a comment.
