After using the saw to cut into the staves thickness and stopping at the halfway mark, you then use a hatchet and a block of wood to whack the hatchet to remove large rectangular pieces. I don't have a hatchet but I have three chisels of different widths. Can I do the same process but substitute the widest chisel I have for the hatchet and a ball peen hammer for the block of wood to whack it with?

If it won't damage growthrings below sure you can. There are many techniques that can be used. The result is the most important. :)

That was my concern that the chisel ends up accidentally digging in deeper then the saw cut. Alright thanks for getting back to me man 👍

It's more about preventing the stave from taking deflex (what happens during heat treating). But sometimes it results in a bit of reflex too. Thanks for the comment!

Hi Dreambow, you are one of the best bowmakers here working with handtools for character bows. But I often miss the performance measurement. Here, would been interesting to see the arrow speed before/ after adding the hemp string/bridges. The inuit used this design-but they tied the main hemp string with other strings on the back, that will save weight. And they had quite weak base materials for the bow, I believe even wale bones (?), so the hemp string helped compensating an unsuitable material. But with red oak-no clue how well this performs without extra support on the back? Anyway, find this an inspiring concept, especially as the hemp string expands in spirals , wonder if this concept would add something when used with modern materials and better integrated designs-a.e just have a groove on the back to fixate the back string it, and maybe use dacron, less weight, and more spiral twist-would that add a tad of speed? This concept is powerfull and not yet fully exploited.

That bowstring/cable configuration is really interesting. I've never seen anything like that. But if it shoots better for it, great. I like the uniformity on this bow, as well. Nice build.

Thank you for the comment! Agree with you, I also prefer simplicity when it comes to the design. Have to test this bow to find out if it's worth the efforts. All the best!

Hey first off beautiful bow man it looks great but I have one question what kind of polish do you use for your wood I always use cooking oil I found it works really good but I was just curious Much love from WVa 👍👍👍

Thank you very much! I used on this one water based varnish. It protects the wood very well and doesn't have to be reapplied after some time. On some of my bows I also used linseed oil. It works good too but has to be refreshed once in a while. Thank you, all the best from Poland!

For bows I used many woods: black locust, ash, red oak, yew, maple, hazel, sweet cherry and more. For arrows I used hazel or dog rose shoots but also pine and birch shafts. There are many woods suitable for bows and arrows

Total BS there's no way that that could add another 41lb for what it looked more like hemp cordage cable is made out of steel or metal strands in fact I've never seen any manufacturer of bows up and including old man bear himself ever do something like that

Cable backed bows are a waste of time if you have half decent wood - like your stave.... Don't twist and lever wood off with your drawknife... Don't cut in the handles width straight away - wait until it's braced to see true string path.... Learn how to sharpen a cabinet scraper - yours is blunter than a very blunt thing.... Don't reverse twist all your string - it will hurt performance a lot and is a waste of time... Your lower limb is weak....
@DreamcraftBows
@DreamcraftBows Жыл бұрын
Might be. It works great for me. As you can see in the video, I narrowed the handle down right in the end of the build. Yes, need to sharpen it. The lower limb has a significant natural deflex. Thank you for the comment and the feedback ;)

What's the most important in my opinion is the result of the build. There is no single only right way to get to that point. My technique isn't perfect for sure.

@@DreamcraftBows Result is a consequence, the most important thing in any serious craftmanship is how we get to the result, skills involved, attention to detail, etc, result quality depends on that. By result quality I mean inner result quality, not visual result quality. The more shooting skills and craftman skills a bowyer has, the better the bows are. If guys like him or me are commenting it's because we know that, and we see that primary focus is on making views, nothing wrong about it, but you'll keep having these comments
