Wonderful video. I appreciate your going into detail and showing the actual abbreviated process of the leveling and smoothing process. Been watching all of your videos and been curious about the function of your planes and the actual adjustment and use techniques. Thank you! Now off to see if I can afford to buy a couple... Thank you again!

After watching you pull and push, I'm going to modify my Number 6 iron plane to use side handles, A lower center of gravity and more weight for follow-through.... Thanks for the inspiration...

I have noticed you don't lift off during back stroke. Could you comment on this?

Hello. We find it is more efficient (quicker) not to totally lift the plane for the back stroke, because the plane is in the perfect postion to cut its next stroke once you are back at the start of the cut. But as I'm pulling the plane back there is no downward force which may not be obvious from the video. We find this method has no effect on the wear of the plane sole or blade. If you need any more info just let us know. Regards Terry

Good explanation. I'm not an expert on your reputation but I know enough to be sure you don't resort to mumbo jumbo. Curiously enough, some German and Central European carpenters tend to lift the heels of their horned contraptions ;) quite intesely. Maybe I got that impression because I've seen mainly scrub plane and jack plane demonstrations.

Hi I'm sure there are lots of techniques for the back stroke when planing. If you find a technique that suits you and the plane your using and stick with that work planing results will improve. Happy woodworking, regards Terry
