felt like I should pin a comment; I like to put things in place temporarily to get the instant gratification of seeing how things are going to shape up. The flagstones will likely be set out first, to see how I want them, and then I’ll worry about getting the ground and setting done right. It’s more work, I know! But hey, it’s my extra work and my process, so no skin off your backs 😉

I worked in landscaping for ten years around DC & after grading your patio area, you must put a substrate of compacted gravel & stonedust ESPECIALLY IN AREAS THAT FREEZE-THAW to prevent the stones sinking under the soil. You can even see that the excavator guy dug deep enough for the gravel & stonedust layer plus the final stone patio layer to be flush with the existing yard’s grade. Please research this before you lay your entire enormous patio! Love your channel. Rock on.

Pro-tip, if you've got mounds of dirt left over from digging out your patio, I piled it up into little hills under some trees beside the patio and planted it with shade-loving flowering plants, now I have magical fairy mounds. The raised mound are easier to plant (less bending) and they show off the plants beautifully and best of all: I didn't have to haul barrow-load after barrow-load of dirt.

My husband and I laid a 14x10 flagstone patio over a month because we redid it about 4 times before it was level and didn’t stub your toes when you walked on it. Word of advice; The foundation is KEY to an even patio. You’ll need some kind of tamper (the stick kind or a roller) and some sort of substrate (we *eventually* used sand). Save yourself the heartache and spend the majority of your time on leveling the foundation.

I love running mini excavators. Have owned a few. One of those and a rubber tracked skid steer and a couple tracked concrete buggies and you can dig and move things anywhere. I have one that the tracks can expand and contract so it can go in a normal back yard gate and then expand the tracks wider for good stability. Set a concrete buggy on the other side of the fence and you can dig on one side of the fence and not have to take the fence down to move the dirt or dig in the yard. Helps to have a laser transit so as he digs you check with the stick to see that it's all level. Set the flagstone on sand so it can be kind of level otherwise you can get the edges of one higher than the others all over and be a huge trip hazard.

My Grandad was a Farmer all of his life. If something needed fixin' he always said "You can fix it with a Hammer, and if that doesn't do it, get a BIGGER Hammer". As age and health progressed, and the edges of his talent were met he became less and less able to tackle most troubles....but often he would try and we would allow him to work on it as much as he could. When it was time to say to him, "You know that there are people that work on this for a living" and he would shrug and head for the house. It was easier, and much more loving to let him tackle things, up to the point that either he could get hurt, or whatever he was trying to work on could have been hurt. Hannah, thank goodness that the roofer is coming to fix the wavy roof, and maybe there are other times that you should apply the thought "There are people that do that for a living". You are not surrendering, you're just getting ready to apply yourself talents to other projects. Keep doing what you are doing being bold and candid with your thoughts and activities, as I love them immensely.

I really enjoy your enthusiasm for every project you do. What fun to play with an excavator! I'm looking forward to seeing where this patio project takes you!

Where is Matt? Miss seeing him. Love all your projects on the cabin and land. You are absolutely amazing. I wish I had had the opportunity years (and years) ago when I was you age to tackle something like this. You are an inspiration!

Your vids are always interesting and entertaining, but this vid was oddly satisfying this week. It is fun watching you re-imagine the homestead into something fresh and vibrant. And you are always up to trying new things! Super!

I’ve been wanting to mention to you… That while you’re putting on the deck, be a great idea to remove that small tree that’s right on top of your house in the corner because as it gets larger the roots will go underneath and just cause structural problems for your cabin… Keep up the good work

I used a lot of crushed stone not for a patio but just around my cottage/cabin build for drainage. Flagstone is a great idea though i can use that to make walking paths.

My lovely girl. You are full on Forrest Faerie! Also, LOVE YOU MICHAEL! Everything just keeps getting better. I think my personal best take away from your videos is to just get going on it and be ok with changing things up when necessary. I'm finally much better at changing things now. Homes grow. 💖
