Do you think you would have time to make a video series for beginners?:) Like how to do a running stitch, whip stitch, how to use a sewing machine and all of these techniques that you make look so easy. These are the first videos I have found enjoyable to watch on sewing and I'm only asking because I recently got a sewing machine and I haven't been able to find any videos that have been helpful.

Have you considered using a rotary blade and mat to make those long cuts? I love watching your shows. You have lovely raw talent. I've done many costumes, ball/prom gowns and wedding dresses/attire and it's hard work dealing with a load of fabric. I don't think people realize the toll it takes on your hands, elbows and shoulders. I enjoy seeing your fabric hauls too. I do believe you have a high level of fame in your future. I'm so happy for you, that your family supports you in your endeavors. Thank you for sharing your talent.

Excellent! This is the kind of thing I would do. I am making handbags out of these awesome curtain panels my sister gave me right now. They are for a handbag or crafting project bag. Pockets all the way around. Every seam finished. The fabric will wear out before my construction does.

Hey Angela, one trick I learned for sewing the bodice onto a gathered skirt is to sew it skirt side up. This way you can control how the gathers look, and adjust gathers in order to keep them even.

Anastazia Crites I am exactly the same as you Anastazia. I do sympathise. I haven't yet taken a class, but I have found the 'Made to Sew' clips here on KZbin to be so helpful, in terms of beginner's (machine) sewing. The handsewing clips here on KZbin are hit and miss; no one channel does everything right. Sometimes camera work is good; sometimes frustratingly unclear. I find it's better that I keep browsing, until I find the best clip for each individual stitch etc. I watch Angel's clips for entertainment value really. I find them very relaxing too.

Like everyone else says: try taking classes. Also see if you can convince a friend to learn to sew with you, that way if the teacher moves to fast for you your friend can help you catch up. People who are also learning tend to have more patience than those who already know in my experience, though to teach a sewing class I'm sure that a lot of patience is needed.

Why did you cut the material into 3 panels rather than using one long piece? Does it make a difference when you gather it?
@IskaCosplay
@IskaCosplay 9 жыл бұрын
Liz Mallia I was wondering the same thing actually...
@AngelaClaytonCostumery
@AngelaClaytonCostumery 9 жыл бұрын
Liz Mallia Because of the print (which I wanted to keep vertical, since it's trees) I had to cut the panels with the fabrics width instead of the length - and the curtains are only 56" wide, so I needed three panels for the volume I wanted. If the curtains had been 168" wide I would have done it all as one piece, because the less seams the better! Some fabrics do gather better or differently depending on the grain line, but that isn't usually an issue with cotton.
@ScorpiusBlue
@ScorpiusBlue 8 жыл бұрын
I'm confused with the gathering part, how do you know how much to gather so it fits for your waist measurement? I'm still new and haven't been brave enough to use my ruffle foot yet and have never made gathers before. Love your tutorials and this pattern is exactly what I'm looking for to make for an upcoming wedding.
@mumblesandwool1243
@mumblesandwool1243 7 жыл бұрын
literally how you just said it dear. :) you gather all the material (if you do this by hand, its much easier and involves no math) and then adjust it til its your waist measurement. if youre doing it by machine, it will involve math and a test strip of fabric. youll have to test a 10" piece of fabric, gather it in your machine (either by ruffler foot, gathering foot or just a basting stitch with the hughest tension on the tio thread) and then measure the fabric after its gathered to see how much its shrunk. so lets say your 10" piece shrunk to 5" with all the gathers. and your waist is 20 inches. youll need 40" inches of UNGATHERED material, because when you put it through the machine to be gathered, it will shrink to 20" after gathering. (10" goes to 5" so.. for the example youll need 20" of GATHERED material to fit your waist. since its 5" after gathers, 5x4=20 (youre trying to basically see how much gathered material you need to get to your waist) . to find out how much material you need before gathering, just multiply that 10 inches by 4 (since the 5x4 will equal your waist) youll need 40 inches of fabric. just apply this concept to ypur own measurements and whatever your test strip comes out to (every machine is different) i hope that wasnt too confusing!

I have a problem with gathered skirts that mina always come out rather bulky around the waist, not in that nice, bell-shaped way yours does here. Any advice?
@BriiCosgallaMakeup
@BriiCosgallaMakeup 7 жыл бұрын
I'm not an expert and it's just a theory I have, since I've got the same problem before. Maybe you're not making the strip of fabric wide enough. If you use more fabric the skirt will be more gathered and it will have more space to be flowy... Ip'm not sure if Im being clear XD i.e. you have a waist of 65 cm and want your skirt 45 cm long , so you cut a rectangle of fabric 45 cm tall and 1 meter long, that skirt will probably be really boxy. But if you cut your rectangle 1.8 m long, it will look more flowy. As I said, I'm not an expert and it's just a theory I still have to prove. I hope this helps at least.

Is It ok to use Curtain Fabric for Dresses? Do this feel suffer or Heavier? I new to buying fabric and lots of lovely printed ones say they are for Curtain Or Upholstery. i can still make a dress from them? Sorry to ask such a silly question
@finnfinn271
@finnfinn271 7 жыл бұрын
tammy JerkChicken from my experience as long as the fabric is comfortable to you it should be fine. Some curtain fabrics are heavier and may feel weird on your body if they're too heavy or may get warm if they're thick fabrics, it's mostly up to your personal preference on what fabrics feel comfortable

I've noticed that whenever you cut bias it's at an angle instead of just straight across the fabric, is there a reason for that? is it like something to do with the pattern or fraying or ?
@postmodernrecycler
@postmodernrecycler 8 жыл бұрын
Fabric stretches more at a diagonal angle. The added stretch allows the bias tape to "ease" around the waist seam and also won't cause puckering from the flat tape being sewn around a circular shape. Bias is actually what you call the diagonal grain of the fabric: hence, bias tape.
@shammydammy2610
@shammydammy2610 7 жыл бұрын
By it's very nature, bias means at an angle. Everything 'on a bias' or 'bias' tape is that way. It prevents sagging and deformation.

I just had one question about the skirt panels: did you cut them so you would only have the design/ print you liked or was there another reason for cutting then sewing back together?

I'm so scared to gather material that way, you could gather too much, or not enough... I always run two rows of very long stitches near the top of the fabric and then pull the bobin threads instead, it gives you a more even gather and you can adjust it easier. I guess it doesn't really make a difference to the outcome, but you're so brave to do it that way lol
