Making a Drill Press Jig for Perfectly Centered Hidden Tang Handle Holes

I've made a small jig for my drill press that helps me get my handles perfectly centered over my hidden tangs. This jig has made my shop life much more efficient, so I'm hoping it helps you as well. Enjoy the video.

I think this could be accomplished with a wood lathe and a long drill bit. Maybe the same as drilling a pen blank.

I have no doubt that would work, but I think a wood lathe is probably the last tool a knife maker would ever buy. This is just a very inexpensive jig, and can be thrown in a drawer until needed.

This is genius. I've tried making jigs to accomplish this but they are always 'meh'. I've also tried mounting a chuck in the table vise, but it's too fiddly. This is a really elegant and versatile solution.

Follow up after trying this out: if you have a free floating table on your drill press (which can make the initial line-up tricky) you can chuck a laser bore site up and turn it by hand slowly to help line center of the plate up. Kind of like a poor man's laser center finder.
