I like the drill angle gauge you use with two nuts. I have always sharpened my drill bits free hand on a bench grinder and get a fairly sharp bit with that method and it is very quick to do.

I like the simple approach, but easier: I will simply 'dado' a longer board with the table saw> then cut the angle with a chop saw> then make the 90 degree cut on the chop saw [90 seconds]. If the dado is slightly smaller than the bit diameter, Its not necessary to round it with a rasp. Make up many of them for different bit sizes at the same time [5 minutes] Guitarmaker from Washington state.

I am happy that I am a Tool & Die Maker and I was taught how to sharpen drills by hand at work, then given about 1000 drills to sharpen perfectly as practice when i was an apprentice. There are different ways to sharpen for different material. Bronze, you take off the sharp edge so it looks a little like a masonry bit. Cutting out the web can ease drill pressure, too much and it will chip under load. the sound of the drill can tell you if it's sharpened properly (you get to learn the sound that is correct and become very sensitive to it when it changes).

@@rpm2dayg648 I was an apprentice and went to school on Fridays. Started school 14 months after getting signed on. One week was theory in a classroom... next week Practical in the shop. I got a paper signed by the teacher when I arrived and left and I got paid for it. One year, I did all the Practical projects in 2 days. All I had to do on Practical days was show up, teacher signed, I had the rest of Friday off and got paid a full day :) My final project was a simple die. Super easy and done so quick. I helped out I think 8 or 9 guys with their project. They're T&D maker apprentices but only run CNC machines. They were clueless. I'm retired from that trade now, I went to Construction. It's ok. benefits are amazing, pay is very good. I love working outdoors. Still, I enjoyed the days as a T&D Maker!!

Why would you need more than one wooden block? Just cut a V in in without rounding it out with the circular file. Then use it for every size from smallest up to the largest.

Yes, it did look that way. But often the frame rate of the video can make rotating objects look like there running backwards. That’s the “stagecoach wheel effect” that’s seen in old western movies where the wheels look like they are turning backwards when the stagecoach is moving forward.

If you have drill bits with bigger diamter, you increase the cutting area and decrease the center, where the bit is not cutting. It is easier to drill a hole in one step, without a small hole in advance.

Firstly the groove or channel in the timber won't suit smaller drill bits.Be careful not to over tighten the grinder in the vice as it will fail. That particular grinding wheel is not the best choice for facing drill bits, use a flat stone type. Never quench a hot drill bit in water as it will untemper the HSS and soften up the hardness which means it will lose it's each quicker. The only thing i support is the old hexagon nut trick for the correct pitch angle. Safety first people,it's not worth hurting yourself for a $15 drill bit.

An old farmer taught me this trick: Press the drill bit cutting point with both hands at its 60 degree angel against a running emery wheel. As it makes contact, move the opposite end of the bit upwards, so that your upward movement ends where the emery wheel sharpens the cutting edge for a moment or two. Repeat this movement until the one wing's cutting edge is sharp. Now repeat this movement with the other wing.

I sharpen drills freehand was taught how as an apprentice. Unless you are doing precision work the angle only needs to be approximate and for thin stuff using a shallower angle will make it much safer. There is no need to bother with the cut outs on the backs except on large bits to help starting from a centre dot, if you drill a pilot hole first it is not needed at all.

Good Evening. the same is good, not perfect. But I have a question? Because at the beginning of the video the drill is turning upside down, so it cannot be drilled, and at the end of the video it turns clockwise, i.e. normally. at the beginning on the left, so of course there will be no drilling, whoever pauses and repeats the video twice will see that it turns wrong at the beginning. so of course there will be no drilling.
