Today we are going to be making a drop point knife out of a file. This knife had its challenges but I was looking forward to over come them. I hope y'all like the video and if you do please think about giving it a like and leaving a comment. If you have any questions I will do my best to answer them.

I’m sitting here in my garage busting out my 17th leather belt and trying some new methods…while watching your video wondering how I can get into making knives also! Loved your content man! Nice work on the knife

Yeah a lot of those noises are why I try to keep the music low enough to hear everything in the background.

I'm really interested in making one. Do you make yours from old files? I know some people don't so I'm just curious

Great work. Love it. One suggestion though that I saw watching an old timer that made knives say. When cleaning the epoxy with acetone point the blade down so as to not have any run in to the area you glued. Lol forward to more of your work.

That's a good point! It makes perfect sense. Thanks for leaving a good suggestion and for watching the video.

Hey mate ! I've just found your channel and I think you made an awesome knife ! Even though I prefer the finish of a handsand knife, this one turned out really nice. Looks comfy and strong, and the shape is very interesting. For a second knife you've nailed it perfectly mate. Hopefully your channel grows faster than mine 😉 Also there's no need to cool the tang when you're grinding it, only the edgde and the tip needs to stay cool, having softer areas on the spine and the tang will actually make a stronger knife. I use a bottle with a small hole in the cap the spray water when I cut steel, I think it will be more handy than your toothbrush 😉 How did you drill through the tang ?
@theriversexperience9383
@theriversexperience9383 6 жыл бұрын
Hey man, thanks for the feedback! Good point about not needing to cool the tang. I heated the tang with a torch while I had the blade in a vice sandwiched between two pieces of steel to keep the heat from traveling to the blade. You have to heat it up, then let it cool as slow as possible, then use cobalt drill bits.

Great piece! Both art and a useful tool. Can’t beat that. Do you make your own blade profiles? 20:21

@@MichhaelGyorkos yes I do. I've made a few hundred profiles at this point.

Nice! Great job! Quick question. Why did you use an oven to heat treat the knife instead of a fire forge? I saw in another video you used both? I'm going to try it so I'm just wondering in what circumstances you need one or the other. Thanks.

How long is the tang and then how long is the blade? I’m trying to get a sense of balance. I know you show it against your hand, but, that’s a variable...Thanks for all your work!

Do you suggest anneal the files then harden? Or just keep the file as is and temper in the oven?
@theriversexperience9383
@theriversexperience9383 2 жыл бұрын
I do a little bit of both depending on whether I'm going to be putting handle scales on it or not. I find it easier to just anneal the file if I have to drill through it.

All I would say to help you out is,,,,,,,,,, Before you complete your knife, always make a jig of your design and place them on a peg board beside your tools. Having a visual of your designs in front of you will come in handy. You never know when you may need to make a duplicate blade for someone. Keep a copy on file! LOL

100% agree with this. I just started making templates of all my knives out of masonite.

was this using a new file? looks like the new kind that are hard to get high carbon not just case hardened on the outside. Either way beautiful knife!
@theriversexperience9383

You just need to look up what brands are not case hardened. Now days some Nicholson files are case hardened, try and stay with the made in america ones.
