I know from my own experience that when some video is about 20 minutes I do not usually watch it completely. That's why I'm trying to make short and not boring videos ;)

So why do all these knifesmiths on "Forged in Fire" do all of that forging and hammering and forging and hammering ad finitum to make a knife out of a car leaf spring when the shape can just be cut out of the leaf spring???? BTW, loved your video.
@SmokeManHavel6 жыл бұрын
This is machining a knife not forging. Machining is a a really quick way to make a blade well enough to be proud of and a great introduction to forging.
@robsonez6 жыл бұрын
Many makers only use the stock removal technique. I dont believe it should be assumed as lesser work in any way. Stock removal means you will spend far more time at the grinder using alot more abrasives and is less steel economical. Forging is to take a piece of steel and shape it, not only profiling but adding bevels and reducing thickness prior to grinding. Five minutes of forging can actually save half an hour at the grinder with far less wastage. With quality blade steel in abundance and not every maker carrying the physical attributes to swing a hammer for long sessions, stock removal has become popular. Not my preferred method but no less skillful or time economical.
@johnc67386 жыл бұрын
Forging also compacts the metal, making it much more dense. Once forged and heat treated it can make a much tougher blade.
@larrybethune39096 жыл бұрын
Ground In Fire or perhaps Drilled in Fire is the next incarnation of the show. But for now forging is a very specific term for a very specific process. Oops I forgot, Cast in Fire.
@robsonez6 жыл бұрын
John C Im not sure compacting is the right word but forging does reaarange the grain structure of the steel which in turn, if done correctly can make the blade tougher. This is more to do with heat treatment than the forging process though and we are talking minute amounts on the scale

Erik Moreno , that's exactly what I want to know. how long in oven and at what temperature ?? usually it's around 500 degrees @ about 2 to 4 hours. depending on thickness of steel and what type. I'd say 500 @ 2 1/2 hours should be fine to relax and relieve stresses in steel.

@oneman295 жыл бұрын
What temp did you bake the knife in the oven at and for how long? Was that in order to temper the material? Would it not be better to heat just the cutting edge to a blue/purple then dip in water? The blade would be super sharp and hard then whilst the rest of the body would still have the original metallurgy of the spring manufacturers.

Here in the Philippines we call such raw material as "Mulye" from the Spanish word "Muelye". Hunting Knives and Jungle Bolos made from such material are quite cheap and durable in our locality. I purchased a thick cleaver (8-inches long, 3-inches wide and quarter-inch thick blade) for only P300. Even the thickest leg-bone, toughest coconuts are no match for it. I also use it in chopping firewood. I just hope the local shops here would have similar or larger ones real soon, I am longing for at least a spare.
