Fire Trailers - A couple of points. Usually, these are not something we like to see on a fire ground as the maneuverability of them is very restrictive in the scrub, aka, reversing. While on reversing, longer draw bars can be easier to reverse with as shorts can jack-knife very quick. The other side is the very common poor setup of pump, plumbing and fire hose. Some suggestions for future, your gussets and brace, put low and sink the tote frame down into the frame to help lock it in. When welding near machined surfaces like the stub axles and bearning races, spray with relase agent or even just WD40/CRC and cover them to avoid the weld spatter pitting into them. Greaseing bearings, a little more slap-downward drives in the grease quicker. Wheels/tyres, suggestion is to use same sizes and stud patterns as your 4WD vehicle towing the trailer, spare tyre then universal. This trailer technically will never pass a roadworthy being unsprung and no brakes. If you have option for electric brakes on these, use them. This trailer along in around the 1300-1400 kilo area. Cam-Loc fittings, like all other firefighting fittings, gender indicates flow direction. Males have outward pointing bits and fluids travel out. Females have internal bits and take fluids in. Suction on pump should be female and suction hose male. While on hoses, cary a couple of 3-4M lengths with male/female on each end respectively and put a 3-way ball-valve on the pump inlet for drafting water out of dams or creeks into tote. Same for the pump outlet, feed the larger outlet to the tote via a valve and the small hose can feed off the 1" outlets. Later on, you will learn to appreciate having a 1" delivery fire hose that will move more than twice as much water as that old black 3/4". Pump choice, make sure the pump is a pressure pump and not a trash pump. Trash pumps are designed to move lots of potentially dirty water and low pressures (transfer pump) and are NOT SUITABLE for fire fighting. I have seen even commericially built trucks for QFES/QFD suppling these low pressure pumps of tankers and appliances and then even worse, fitting them with compound setups. A good and quick way with Honda pumps, the case colour. Yellows are single stage pressure (firefighting) pumps and will do a good 60 odd PSI while the red pumps are twin stage and can get over 80PSI while still moving plenty of water. Both yellow and red can still move 350-450Lpm when drafting and self-priming as long as you have some water in the case. "Aussie Pumps" l;ike yours make both trash/transfer pumps and pressure pumps but the cases look the same and no easy to identify markings which is a PITA when we need to identify them in a hurry, if Aussie reading this, paint your bloody cases. Looking at your testing at end, that pump is lacking pressure, might be a transfer pump, upgrading to a Honda Red will be a big pump for you. The most effective use of water in low-intensity fires (Grass and surface fuesl) is high-pressure, low-flow. As for the build, nice welds and strong build.

Hi Ben, Thankyou for the very valuable tips that I hope others can use for their setups. Much appreciated!

@@ScottTurnerformeindustrious I thought that was a damn good tip. For me, the jockey wheel could be a weld on.. 90 degrees up, 90 degrees down in a second. And yes, plumb the pump so you don't need to waste time priming it. Because when you'll need this...... you'll already be in a bit of a hurry. Make all the stuff onboard do-able in seconds without thinking about it. You'll spend enough time getting it going, and when you're faced with a lot of burny - stuff.... seconds count. BTW, been watching for years mate. Love the channel.

Hi Scott, THE BIGGEST TIP I CAN GIVE YOU IS KEEP FRESH FUEL IN THE TANK AND CARBY AND RUN IT REGULARLY. I had a customer who bought a pump to share with his neighbour because the neighbour had a swimming pool. Problem was he put the pump in the shed and didn't run it after he took it home. Fires looming around Menai Sydney, he decided to get the pump out and get it fire ready, no start. Fuel was off and varnished the carby, something you don't want in an emergency. Regards, Steve. PS: Luv ya workshop!

Thanks Steve. Yes I agree. I normally use premium fuel and turn the fuel tap off and run it dry. Huge thanks!

Looks great. If you plumb the Suction line into the IBC Outlet the Pump will self prime with the water level above saving alot of headache and time.
@nordishkiel5985
@nordishkiel5985 14 күн бұрын
Agreed. Having both options (long suction line for creeks and the IBC) will save valuable time if things get hot. A T-Fitting with two ball valves should make it quite easy to switch over. Specialized valves with two positions and three connections will be pricy in that diameter. You can also try to add a dedicated primer tank above the pump with a valve connected to the priming port to ensure you can quickly gravity-prime it if necessary. When there was a fire on the firing range (very common with tracer rounds), the army had "fire swatters", worked quite well for grass fires. Might be worth to put 2 on the trailer for when water runs out or the engine quits. www.blick-aktuell.de/Bilder/In-der-Niederdreeser-Gemarkung-uebte-die-Feuerwehr-579027m.jpg

Hard work on the videos keeps us coming back! The trailer hubs, I always get grease on the threads, nuts, pin and cover the inside of the dust cap, then you don't find mystery rust when you open them back up. Maybe a storage spot for a set of wheel chocks?. Probably a ton of ideas could get implemented. I'm already looking forward to the update video! haha That galvanized metal is nice though. Great job!
@ScottTurnerformeindustrious
@ScottTurnerformeindustrious 15 күн бұрын
Thank you! Yes plenty of grease on the exposed metal doesn't hurt. I do need to make a set of decent chocks as this guy has no brakes. I want a tool set on the trailer also in case the carby gets dirt in it or I need to replace the spare plug etc. I always appreciate the comments and feedback!

You need a better solution to have to avoid the priming of the pump, as when the need is there, then there is panic, and you could be waiting valuable time with messing around to get the pump to work. Looks good. On the discharge of the pump put a large diameter hose to the top of the tank (with a ball valve) for fast filling. Also you can put a pressure relief valve on the discharge with a hose back into the tank (20mm should be plenty) so if you close the nozzle it lets a bit of water flow through the pump and prevent boiling the pump. If other people are likely to use the unit, you can print up some cue-cards and laminate them. The T piece on the suction with one ball valve from the tank and another from the draw hose is a great idea, saves precious seconds. You can even use the last bit of water in the tank to prime the suction line.

Lot's of good tips, thank you! I will look to make that run around circuit and suction directly from the tank outlet. Will make set up easier and keep the unit's versatility if I need to pump from the creek. Thank you!

Maybe I am a bit late to the party. Great video with great skill. Well done. One update, if you have not already done that. On the pressure side, have an other tap blowing back into the tank. Crack tap a bit so when you're not using your fire hose, water still goes through the pump, stopping it from overheating. It's great for when you're observing a fire but want to be ready for action instantly. Again, great stuff wished more people were prepared like you in rural settings.

Install a small valve with a hose in the front of the ibc for priming. It will work when the tank is full. I think I would have mounted the hose reel less exposed. When there is a fire, you get stressed and can more easily run Into trees and stuff. How about a space for an extra petrol can? 👍😃 I agree that the suction hose is long. Better that than having a card directly on the tank. Super video! Thanks😃👍💪

Scott I have a very similar saw to that in my small workshop, I made a few modifications to mine on a video. Improved the clamping handle, installed a coolant pump and a catch tray etc. they are fantastic for small spaces and it's like having an extra pair of hands in the workshop. Great video as always!

Well done. 👍 I made up a fire fighting pump when I had the acreage, but luckily we had a couple of dams to pump from so all I did was make a small trailer to mount the pump on that I could tow with my ride-on mower, plus I had 2" poly run around the property that I could pull water from as well that was linked into both a bore and the dams, so no need to carry water. I used a lay flat as my fire hose. (PS: I hope you enjoyed my little Steam Engine build)

Hey Scott! Greetings from Argentina! Is good to see you are doing alright. I’ve been watching your videos for years now, and I keep coming back to watch and give you a thumbs up, because you are a great guy. And your projects are awesome. Now... for your problem with ticks, I recommend going to a veterinarian shop and buying a product that’s used to spray on animals and on kennels to keep fleas ticks and other critters away. It’s a liquid that you mix with water and you can spray it around the house, and is also safe for humans and animals. And to get ticks off of you without the risk of getting the little legs stuck in your skin, use cooking oil and bathe that sucker in oil, it will let go on its own. Keep making videos and I’ll keep watching them, cheers mate!

Great work as always, Scott! Hug right back to ya. We've just moved to an at-risk of bushfire area and I spent the day getting to know the fire fighting system. We have the same Honda motor as you, which has apparently not run for over 5 years. We gave it a dust, flushed the tank, cleaned the plug, replaced the oil and she fired up with a single pull. Good to be prepared, but hope to never need it. All the best.
