Making a Fishing Tackle Box: Andrew Pitts ~ FurnitureMaker

A client made a request for a fishing tackle box to present as a gift. The box was to be reminiscent of her father's very old tackle box, so I made up a modern version suitable for presentation, but still fully functional if used in the field. In the final piece I also carved a very nice wooden presentation plaque that I mounted inside the top, but since it included a personal message I left that out of the video.
These woodworking videos show how Andrew Pitts makes his fine custom furniture in his woodworking workshop in Virginia. He also often demonstrates new uses for his ShopBot Desktop CNC routing machine, and has included other useful videos such as how to photograph furniture.

Remember you're talking about mostly very small fishing tackle (hooks, sinkers, etc). You need dividers inside most of those divided compartments, with only two or three larger compartments remaining for tools (pliers, tape measure, scale, etc) and similar. Removable dividers are ideal, but even fixed dividers for smaller compartments would work.

Agreed. This was really not meant to be used fishing, though. It was a retirement gift meant to sit on a table, more as art than practical.

When I saw this I thought you copied my box which is identical from 2 years ago. It is so close it is scary. I'd show a picture if I could but then it is as I said the same. I also filled mine with handmade plugs, poppers and lures all from cedar. I also made a matching rod tube, dip net and a wood casting rod made of birch with a maple/birch bark handle in the 1930's style.

Peter Dallman Peter, I'd love to see a photo of your box. Did you use as thick material as I did? One comment I received indicated that typically the wood used is much thinner. I'd love to hear your thoughts on that, since it sounds like you use your box when fishing. By the way, I did design this box construction (dimensions, joinery, etc) for this particular client, but it is a very common style that has been around a long time. Like they say, there is nothing new in furniture design. Andy

Really cool projects you do. But you should talk to somebody about filming and editing. Show by closeups some of the important steps. Talk over the video instead of showing minuits of you talking. Much better to see you working while hearing your talk. As your videos are now I skip through all of it. I am bored to be honest. Would love to subscribe to follow your cool projects. But not as it is now.
