Agateware is a name given to marbled pottery made from two or more different colors of clay, resulting in a swirly or layered appearance. This nickname comes from the stone agate because of the distinctive layers.
This video demonstrates creating a marbled cup which is fluted, revealing the layers of the marbled clay underneath. I show the process of throwing, trimming, fluting, making a handle, attachment, and final cleaning. I use a Giffin Grip for trimming. www.giffingrip.com/

For more videos on using marbled clay, check out this entire playlist where I show examples of throwing bowls, cups, etc. Also, I plan to add handbuilding ones to it as well eventually! :

This is absolutely bautiful and this colour combination and shapes are exquisite . I have shown this video to many friends in Japan including two potters and they absolutely loved it . You should definitely sell there , this is exactly the sort of aesthetic , Japanese people love . Western but with a perfect touch of traditional Japanese aesthetics . You would make a fortune in Japan .

Good morning, Karan! ☀️ Finally getting out today to look for waxy shoe polish and water colors. I don’t have an art supply store where I live, but there is a Ben Franklin that has all kinds of hobby items. Do you recommend water colors in a tube or dry pellets? I am so looking forward to experimenting and finishing work on my pieces. Since they are outdoor pieces, and since bisque is porous (like terracotta flower pots), I was thinking I have lots of glass mosaic pieces I could apply as a top design layer. This would make the piece heavier... So, I will try the shoe polish and water colors first! Thanks again, Karan.

Hi Karan. Just wondering if you can answer two questions. 1.I have a bunch of bisqueware but I no longer have a kiln or access to commercial firing. Can you recommend a stain or some sort of colorant/sealer that wouldn’t require additional firing? (My pieces are not food service items...mostly wind chime pieces and birdhouses.) 2. I could watch you throwing and trimming this mug forever. Is it true that left-handed people need to throw on a wheel that turns in the opposite direction? Thank you. Your students are so lucky to have you.
@KaransPotsAndGlass
@KaransPotsAndGlass 6 жыл бұрын
Great questions! As to the first- colored waxy shoe polish is great! I also would use watercolor paints with my younger students and we would seal it with a floor sealer. (Like JohnsonWax or something like that- it’s been years I forget what it was!). As or the question about left handed throwing... if you want to throw with a left hand orientation- (opposite of right hand placement) I would recommend a clockwise rotation. I do know several left handed people that also throw with a right handed rotation and hand placement. I’d recommend trying it both ways, see what feels best. Just remember though, whichever you choose, when centering, the rotation should be coming toward the outer hand not spinning away from it! :)

This is a fascinating technique that yields beautiful patterns. However, "facets" are usually flat surfaces, as in a cut diamond. I think a better term would be "fluted", as used in period furniture and classical architectural columns.
@KaransPotsAndGlass
@KaransPotsAndGlass 6 жыл бұрын
You are absolutely correct! :) Somehow as I shot the video, the term escaped my reach... but when I put together the video to post, I did recall the correct term, and have the correct one in the title! ;)

Hello, how long is the drying time after throwing to trimming? :)
@KaransPotsAndGlass
@KaransPotsAndGlass 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Mark- the drying time is dependent upon your environment. When I handle something, I always try to dry slowly to prevent cracking. Usually, slow drying for me would be about 5 days to get it thoroughly bone dry and ready for firing. :)

how much does your pottery wheel cost?
@KaransPotsAndGlass
@KaransPotsAndGlass 5 жыл бұрын
Mine is over 20 years old at this point... and this model is hard to find. I did find a supplier which sell it for a bit over $800 without the motor and splashpan. With those included, it is a bit over $1200. But, if you are looking for a good wheel, you can find motorized wheels from tabletop versions around $400 - $500 up to the floor models up to around $1500. When I first bought it, I put aside money I earned from teaching some classes on the side. If you set aside a little money a bit at a time, it makes it a more manageable purchase!
