For it being your first time forging a blade from steel tou have done yourself proud. Having put so much time and effort into hand forging the steel for the blade and using such a beautiful piece of wood for the handle. That knife really deserves a quality hand stitched leather sheath.

Orb Weavers really are beautiful creatures. I used to have a couple of Spiny Orb Weavers that lived in my backyard in the fruit trees.

Turned out cool! I've never tried a lot of that stuff. That sucks that the spider lost two legs, but glad you finished anyway.
@DecomposingMoss4 жыл бұрын
Tip : When you first start hammering the piece, to give it the rough shape, use a heavier hammer. Even if the hammer is only slightly heavier, the positive difference is noticeable. This allows for better control of the hit placement as you are able to allow gravity to do more work and can focus more on accuracy.

That's a great knife! I got to forge a nail at Makers Central this rear and I still carry it around in my pocket sometimes. It's great to get to see you get into this stuff as well and broaden out! I'm not going to enter the draw though, since the knife wouldn't be street legal over here and it would be a shame for something like that to be kept hidden away.
@masteroftheuniverse1495 жыл бұрын
Overall a beautiful knife. One thing for the next one, using the file guide is great for making your the ricasso perfect and even, but you really should round the corner's where the tang meets the blade. Having such hard edges creates stress points on the knife and makes it more likely to break in those areas leaving you with a handle-less knife and no way of repairing it. But great build for your first knife!

Did you have any issues with the epoxy overheating during the shaping process? I've heard that's one of the drawbacks of using power tools to shape epoxy resin.
@Procrastination27874 жыл бұрын
a maybe tip for forging? this is just a thing i notice, the tang was kinda thin, i mean yes you want everything to stay nice and sleek but a chain is only as strong as its weakest link and most blades is see break do so where the blade and tang connect, thinning it out from what i've seen causes it to be weaker. its just an idea i had,
@jaimeirizarry39025 жыл бұрын
The way you tapered your handle material all the way to the guard like that has a potential to slip out of your hand but other than that, it's a beautiful knife, awesome for a first try!

What is the blue paint/ ink you use before you mark your knife with the caliper?

@provibegarage5 жыл бұрын
Really cool idea. Turned out nice but if it was me I’d re-do the handle if my spider broke like that.
@derekdamko5 жыл бұрын
Great looking knife, my one concern is that you put hard 90 degree corners at the ricasso, where your tang meets the blade. This can cause stress fractures and over time and could eventually break.You really want a bit a radius there to not allow for stress fractures to happen. That handle looks awesome. Great work for your first knife, wish I had the 2x72, really hogs away material fast.

I love your knives and yoir channel I've thought Ild had great knives but yours are grade a amazing
@rscrom15 жыл бұрын
Great work. But if you keep the corners from the tang to the blade slightly rounded there is less chance of a break at that joint. But nonetheless. Great work.
@shawnmurphy49705 жыл бұрын
So when you establish your tang and finish it up where the Tang in the shoulder the knife meets shouldn't be square you need to round It Off because that avoids your knife from having a stress point and potentially breaking right there at the Tang
@knighticon21505 жыл бұрын
The transition between tang and the rest of the knife need to have a slight roundness to it. If its square the knife will brake off fron the tang.
@CorkKNIFE3 жыл бұрын

It's a nice knife man especially for a first attempt. Shame about the legs. Maybe a few dabs of super glue on the legs before the small resin pour to keep it down?

I've made a few knives and have a few tips that may help you now you can take this with a grain of salt because I never had power tools other than a cheap drill I would have shaped the handle before attaching it to the blade then finish it up that and work with epoxy occasionally next time try putting a thin coat of your epoxy of choice on your insect to keep it in the position you want then casting it after the epoxy on the insect cures just my advice

I notice that u have some small bubles in resin.i leve the resin in the sun or in hot water after i mix it for 5-15 minutes that way the resin become more thin and the bubles come to surface faster...dont know if work with every tipe of resin... Beside that the knife is beautifull

Next time don't square off the tang to the blade, it creates a stress point like any other sharp corner, next time you should round it off a bit.

Though i've never forged before i do know some things like how with the tang though u did relize it i think u stayed on the sides to long cuz u need to get all sides evenly and u let it get to cold while working with it and that can make it brittle. Like i said i have no experience i just know about this stuff so please be kind i'm just trying to be helpful.
