i wish you showed how you wired that. im needing to do the same thing with a similar motor out of a squirrel cage fan for a rotary tumbler im building. nice video

Can you do this with a 3 wire ecm type variable speed blower motor?
@uxwbill8 ай бұрын
Maybe, but it will take a different approach. The ECM motors I'm familiar use 24 volts on certain connector pins to select the operating speed.
@theadhdhandyman5 жыл бұрын
This is exactly what I was looking for, I didn't think of using 3-ways. Thanks
@klystronvariant268625 күн бұрын
If you put voltage on more than one winding at a time you will smoke that little motor almost instantly.
@uxwbill25 күн бұрын
Then you understand the purpose of this setup, which is to help make damaging the motor impossible.
@klystronvariant268621 күн бұрын
@@uxwbill I was just commenting because at about 1:25 you said you weren't sure what would happen if you energize more than one winding at a time. From my won experience / tinkering I learned it will almost instantly fry the motor.
@uxwbill20 күн бұрын
I don't remember everything I've ever said in a video, especially as time wears on. :-) I said that mainly because while I figured something bad would happen, I didn't want to ruin a motor to find out what. Several years later, some other students in my HVAC/R classes proved this theory. The motor they cooked still ran on high speed, so I guess they wrecked the autotransformer for the other speeds.

Do you have a simple drawing of the wiring of the 3-way switches? I am going to do this to a 3 speed blower. Thanks.

Brilliant I also have a 4 speed unit. your wiring diagram worked perfectly. saved me a bundle on a special switch! thanks so much

where did you get the diagram???

Can you show how you wired the fan inside the box I have a same set up and looking to do the same thing. If you can show how it is wired inside the box that would be great. I don't want to burn anything up. Like my house.

how do you wire it up ?? you should make a video on that

I like your 'think outside the box' speed selector/interlock Easy and inexpensive as you can use the builders grade (cheap) switches
@fourfortyroadrunner15 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure what purpose you had in mind, but when you run a typical blower WITHOUT the normal ductwork that the system sees, you rarely can run it higher than "low" without "overamping" the motor. Therefore using one as say, an attic fan, one must be very careful that the motor is not overamping and overheating. This is also true of furnaces/ rooftop units with minimal ductwork or an A/C unit that's iced up

Nice. Cheaper and easier to diy than a multi pole changeover switch.
@uxwbill2 жыл бұрын
I spent hours trying to find a suitable multipole switch and couldn't find anything that was appropriate and didn't cost a ridiculous amount of money. I still have this fan set up as in the video and use it quite often.

why not a speed control for a ceiling fan although i am not sure what the biggest amperage rating you can get

this is very interesting!!! i have one of these motors and was woundering if you have a simple diagram explaining your wiring. great video!!!

OK .. this is all about switches! How do u fix the fan? Thought this was a how to video.. or show how the fan works inside and out... nice job on the switches tho..

Never mind....figured it out. I went and bought 3 switches and checked them with my meter and it is very simple.

Why didn't you show the wiring?
@uxwbill3 жыл бұрын
At the time I hadn't drawn a diagram, didn't intend this as a how to, wasn't finished with it, and so on.
@Helo73515 жыл бұрын
I got a really good laugh out of that one! :-)) I think you have to confirm it anyway. (Are you sure you want to block this user?) My grandfather's house had a dirt foundation, and always had a very distinct smell. I wouldn't call it 'musty', because I didn't mind it. I visited the people who moved in about 3 years after he died and we sold everything, and that smell brought back so many memories.

i absolutely need a schematic of this switch assembly as i am going to use a similar blower on a forge and need the ability to change speeds, PLEASE post it... some of us are desperate for it! thank you....
@LBLUME07228 жыл бұрын
If you're contemplating using a blower this big on a forge don't. It is way too powerful, even on it's lowest setting, and will shoot the burning coals all over the place. I am speaking from experience. Either find a hair dryer to blow air into the forge or you might consider switching to propane. Propane is cleaner and much easier to clean up after you melt or heat up metal. Plus you don't need a blower to get the propane into the forge. Check out the king of random for a great tutorial for assembling a propane torch.

LukaTuba Blume lol.... after speaking with several other blacksmiths, I can to the same conclusion. I cut off the electrical wires and welded a hand crank up to it.
