Nice job. If I was going to build something like this, I would use a composites approach to save weight, and when using a wood or foam core, you also get significant vibration dampening which is nice. S-glass fiberglass + high quality epoxy + plywood core makes some pretty strong and durable for the weight stuff. Even better add some carbonized CNC's (cellulose nanocrystals) to the epoxy. Also, for tubes, bamboo + S-glass fiberglass+epoxy+foam core makes some awesome tube structures. And if people want to do things on the cheap and still save some weight, regular fiberglass + plywood + Titebond III works pretty good as well. Believe it or not, Titebond III has a similar tensile strength (in some cases higher) as many regular store bought, two part epoxies. It's water based, has no fumes, is super non toxic, is pretty waterproof, and is far cheaper than the high quality epoxies used for boats, race cars, etc. (If using bamboo though, I would not use Titebond III for that unless the tubes are not load bearing. If they are load bearing at all, poney up for the high quality expensive epoxies with around 10k psi tensile strength and other high strengths.) Really, composites is where it is at for very high strengths at lower weights. And just adding 2% by weight graphenic graphite or carbonized CNC's to the epoxy helps to turn that S-glass composite better than expensive carbon fiber, but at much cheaper cost (it's fairly easy and inexpensive to make the above). I would also switch out the brushed motor for a brushless.

Good points but sometimes heavier is better. Your knowledge of composites is good but please show a single example of anyone in the world DIY building a grunty escooter using them. Btw, have you ever built a scooter?
@justinw17652 жыл бұрын
@@mikesalive I have an even better example. James Biggar built a full on electric motorcycle out of a composite of plywood and fiberglass, in his video titled "How I Built An Electric Motorbike...Out Of Plywood?" And no, when it comes to especially electric vehicles which are run by batteries, heavier is NOT better--it means you have less battery life. Composites also can create far stronger structures at less weight than straight metal structures. It's why race cars, aerospace, etc, etc uses a lot of composite design. The new Aptera car is also built out of primarily composites and their crush and crash testing is quite impressive as to the strength to weight ratio. Their car is so light weight and aerodynamic that it gets ridiculously high travel time/distance for its batteries. No, I have not built an electric scooter before/yet. I'm in the middle of a project currently and can't start anything new for awhile, especially since after the prototype is finished and tested, it will be going on a crowdfunding site. It is on the eventual bucket list to build some kind of electric vehicle though. If my product takes off and I eventually have the money to hire people to build it for me, then I will have the time and money to do other projects for myself.
@mikesalive2 жыл бұрын
@@justinw1765 As I said, sometimes heavier is better. Increased weight provides greater inertial stability for moving vehicles. You will come to understand this with experience. Nothing in your wall of text is new information to me as I've been using composites in my own projects since the 1990's. Intriguing that a man who has time to write such long comments on youtube videos doesn't have time for extra projects. As they say, "if you want something done, give it to a busy person." That being said, I wish you all the best in your upcoming life.

@DigBipper1884 жыл бұрын
Looked like he did in some of the clips. The sprocket stopped as soon as the motor did but the wheel continued to rotate. See 5:17 where he checks chain tension and spins the wheel a couple times. It would potentially be possible to slam a multi-speed freewheel or cassette in there as well, but as his wheel had a nonstandard freehub that wouldn't be possible with that specific wheel. You'd need one with a standardized freehub or screw mount for a freewheel to be able to do that. Although it would be awesome being able to row through gears on an electric scooter...
@claudechirico54294 жыл бұрын
How long do the batteries last and how do you recharge.
@DigBipper1884 жыл бұрын
@@claudechirico5429 As with any electric vehicle... depends on how hard you rag on it. If we say that the battery has a capacity of 378wh calculated at nominal voltage, and the motor was to pull a full 1000w at all times, this should net you a runtime of around 30 minutes. The distance you could travel at that power draw would be very heavily influenced by any gradients or bumps in the road just like with any other vehicle. This is, of course, somewhat unrealistic compared to actually range testing the vehicle as the power demands constantly fluctuate, But it does give you a minimum expectation for how far it *should* be able to go if you were to floor it absolutely everywhere. As for how to recharge it, a word of warning: 1: Never over-charge a lithium ion cell, this can and does result in explosion and/or fire. 2: Don't over-discharge a lithium ion cell. This will damage it internally and shorten its life. 3: Never charge cells in series without the an adequate protection board or constant monitoring. Li-ion cells, unlike NiMH and NiCd have very different internal resistances from cell to cell, and you will always have one cell minimum that takes in more current than the others. This is why the act of "balancing" a li-ion battery is vital. It counters this lower internal resistance and allows the pack to charge more evenly. For Li-io / LiPo cells, your safe voltages are as follows: A drained cell is 2.8 to 3.00v (It's recommended to only discharge to 3.00v fir best longevity) Nominal voltage is 3.6 to 3.7v Storage voltage is 3.8v Fully charged is between 4.1 and 4.2v With that out of the way... you have 3 options... 1: use a BMS just like OP did. This allows you to feed in a voltage that is identical to the pack's fully charged voltage (e.g 42v for a 10S 36v pack) and the BMS will automatically monitor and stop charging once a cell (or bank of cells if you have more than 1 cell in parallel) reaches 4.2v. 2: Use a balancing charger: This will automatically monitor and also balance the pack to ensure that all of the cells are at the same voltage while simultaneously feeding current into the pack to charge it. This will net a fuller charge than most BMS modules excluding smart ones like AntBMS, but it can take longer to charge the pack. 3: Manually charge each bank of cells and use a low voltage alarm to protect the pack from over-discharge. This process is very slow and not recommended unless it's the only way you can safely charge the battery pack.

Hey question around how much did it cost u to make this for the parts, etc? Love the build! Reason I'm asking is to see if its cheaper to make one yourself or buy one from store
@sed64 жыл бұрын
About $100 for the battery, about $100 for the motor, chain, controller and wiring, and you could source or build the rolling chassis for about $100 or less. So $300 is my guess!

@@PWingert1966 a $ 20 hacksaw will work fine, and a belt drive would be soooo much better than a roller chain- it's so much more quiet. A wonderful project, because it's potentially so simple yet so fun. How cool would it be to make a propane powered steam engine generator to charge the batteries under way? Or a fold-out solar panel charger?
@chelarestelar3 жыл бұрын
@@someotherdude there's a dude called "vicesat" who basically put a gasoline-powered generator on the back of an electric scooter to charge the batteries while riding, thus increasing range but not having it actually powered with a gasoline engine. he's spanish, doe
