did you explain why you did cutting edges different from the original one that looked to be 180? It looked like you staggered the inserts too. Awesome work, wish we could have machining the 4 start thread and I'm sure you do too.

Hi Steve. The 4mm radius wouldn't allow them to be in line. No matter they are angled as long as on the centre line. I deleted the threading by accident and not taking care. 😲 merry Xmas

Very cool and impressive Dave. Amazing how you can get the cartridges so accurate. 01 tool steel for the Cartridges and EN24 for head. Any need to heat treat parts after machining? Never seen coolant used to blue steel. Do you just put the parts in coolant for x minutes and air dry? Thanks for the video.

S B there does exist a cold blueing solution but that looks a lot more blue, it’s used often in gunsmithing. Maybe it’s just very diluted since the metal of the tool didn’t take the blue very well

Pretty impressive Dave. I've always been the shits at trying to run two axis at the same time. You make it look easy. Did you index each of the four starts on the thread from each of the four jaws on the chuck? Have a Merry Christmas. Ken

It is a 44mm pitch so wind the compound 11mm after each thread is cut to depth with a 5.5mm cutter. I've done scores of these threads. Merry Christmas

I may have already responded to this but I am using my phone and am awful at it. Anyway I almost cut a multi-pitch thread once; the job fell through. I spent some time in a machinist handbook and they always tell you to disengage the lead screw from spindle and then index the spindle the required amount and re-engage the spindle. However your way is so much simpler that it should be taught in school. Anyway I’m having a hell of a Christmas Day and I hope you are to.

@@userwl2850 Yeah, a clapped out knee mill and a budget CNC. The CNC is so much more useful; the knee mill doesn't get any use these days. In the next month I might add a couple used industrial machines, CNC lathe and mill, but frankly an investment property is calling me a bit harder. Also located in Southern Illinois, USA.
