Learn how to make kumiko - Kumiko Starter Kit - bit.ly/kumiko-starter-kit
This desk has a modern feel with heavy traditional Japanese influences. There were a lot of processes in this desk that involved techniques I haven't done before. I pushed a little harder during the design process which forced me to push myself while making it. I'm glad to add new skills to my tool belt. If you'r on the fence with trying something new, maybe give it a try and you might learn something new.

Hi Johnny, Greetings from an Australian woodworker. Absolutely loved your work and attention to detail on this desk. The furniture you make is a lot different to mine. Actually the woodwork you do is very different to a lot of the maker channels which is very refreshing to watch. I will go back through your videos over the next few days. Thanks for sharing your tallents. James

Gorgeous! The whole design is just stunning. Using the walnut cutoffs to clamp the angled legs is so smart. Lovely job, Johnny!

i said it on IG but I'll say it again. The desk turned out fantastic. Kumiko looks like a whole lot of tedious work not just in making it but putting it together, taking it apart, gluing, and putting it back together. Hope to see the chair build soon. R2

Amazing work Johnny! I'd love to know how you did the goma gara pattern. What's the correct order of operations so that the smaller triangles fit precisely within the larger ones while maintaining even spacing all around?
@JTWoodworks
@JTWoodworks 4 жыл бұрын
This was my first time trying it and I cut the pieces to length with the appropriate angles and then cut the half laps. I think it might be easier to do it the opposite way though. Making the triangle with long sides and trimming to fit. Both ways would work so maybe them out and see what works best for you. Thanks for watching!

Wow ... Your work is always beautifully put together, but the attention to detail in this project is amazing. It terms of pushing your comfort zone, I am 100% sure that I wouldn't have the patience for the intricate Japanese paneling. Out of interest, where / when did you start researching the traditional Japanese construction? Also, and slightly tongue in cheek after my less than complementary comment about the music in an earlier video, I thought the music in this video was far more in keeping with your delivery, and the style of the furniture. As always, thank you

Thank you! I appreciate the kind words. I learned how to make a kumiko panel in a class about 7 months ago and it was a far simpler process than I originally imagined. Since then I kept making them for practice and slowly introduced then into projects. If you're interested in learning, I sell kumiko starter kits that include jigs and pieces as well as walk you through how to make a small kumiko panel. There's a link in the description to check it out

Hi Johnny, I have worked out what I have a problem with on this desk of your's, it is the drawer fronts. They are too simplistic but I cannot tell you what I would do to improve them, but I shall give it some thought. The Kumiko work is beautiful.
