Actually most here criticizing are incorrect. There are 9 styles of forging a katana. This style would be considered Maru. Its ultimately the weakest version but still a recognized version of katana due to it's a single piece of steel forged. The steel used to make the best katana cannot be purchased by any one here criticizing this man. So short of the Sanmai style which is the 3rd best method on Japanese forging and most common in Japan today, no one in the world short of 3 people by the comments here can make a true katana. As for the layering comments. If you forge weld two 500k layer pieces you will have 1000000 layers. Congratulations young man you made a beautiful katana for that is a katana. Due to my love of Japanese culture I felt I had to correct some of these comments although I doubt the ones who claimed this is not a katana has fully studied the history up to present times.

It's not about the Katana, that's just eye candy. At only 19 Alec has acquired a unique skill set that defines him as a true craftsman. Still young but already has teaching skills and the ability to hold an audience and produces his own video's too, a very rare person indeed!

Is the unique skill eye candy
@BothHands16 жыл бұрын
Keith Waterhouse I really hope he revisits the katana though - 2018 Alec would never allow this quality to pass, which is crazy, because the quality is *amazing* But 2018 Alec makes sure balance is at the exact right spot, and the distal taper is right to the thousandth of a millimeter, and that the hamon would be included. I know he made a conscious choice to not do a hamon, because it would have changed the aesthetics of the piece, but 2018 Alec knows that it's there for a reason, and wouldn't leave it out just to make the sword look nice. That's not to say the work isn't utterly spectacular, but he's set the bar even higher with his recent work, and so i can't help wondering how this would have turned out if he'd've made it with all the knowledge and experience he has now. I really hope he does another katana!!

Not just that, but he also forgot to make the fuchi. I think he got a little burnt out once he got to making the tsuka and rushed it a little, which is understandable for how many hours he had put into it. The regulations about machine working tells you a different story! Never wear gloves on lathes, drillpresses, millingmachines, ... they may catch your clove -> your hand -> your arm, and may rip it of. Only grinding machines come over this, because of the sparking, that may damage the skin, and cloves in contact to the surface get eaten up.

dear mr. steele, i do not read comments nor have i ever commented before in the five years i have been on KZbin. i think this would be better done privately but I do not know how. your effort with the katana has moved me to express myself. i came to this feeling on the katana #14 episode about 12:40. when you noticed that you needed another spacer i expected you to be done with any more adjustments. i expected you to find a way to fix the problem with maybe glue, or caulk, or maybe gum. i did not expect you would pull it apart again and properly attend to the problem. i would not have thought twice about any shorter fix because by #14 12:39 i have already accepted that since this is the last katana episode, i would suffer the finals moments of it and await the next regular episode and allow this whole katana ordeal to become a memory. the series has been long drawn out and a test to my loyalty. AND THEN ... at 12:40 i came to a moment of introspection while feeling guilty for betraying my loyalty to the program. you have given to me, and i feel confident i am not unique among your +/- 500,000 subscribers, an understanding of the following attributes of a craftsmanship: 1) loyalty to your viewers for providing quality content, true and genuine emotions while you go through the ups/downs, successes/frustrations of your craft and skill, and attention to the details that make your work so valuable2) the value of tenacity while you work through your projects and suffer the adagio of the grinding, to the largo of sanding so that we can enjoy the accelerando into the final movement of every series where i can smile to myself and under my breath say, "damn, that turned out sooooo beautiful" be it a damascus knife or a leaf.3) the joy of a process and commitment to its demands. i know if I ever lacked any these qualities i only have to think of what you might do and i would find an example of how to be and how to do it properly. congratulations on coming to 500,000 subscribers. do not doubt you will double that soon and thank very much for allowing me to join you in your workshop. p.s. plz do not forget to fix the hat rack in your truck. a fine hat deserves a fine place to keep it, and it is a fine hat. also i think before i get too much older i might seek out a lesson or two from you. i would like to forge someday. why not get a lesson from a master? forge on you firebrand of steel!!! i probably should edit that out.

Nice sword tbh. I'm not a black smith, but I enjoy your videos. I'm actually a machinst, and wanted to give you some advice. When using carbide inserts, on fly cutters, or knife heads, take a bit deeper cuts. The layer on the outside is harder than inside, and you will get better results taking 0.5mm deeper cuts, and save your tools from unwanted wear. I would also suggest annealing part of the blade. Great vids though, a lot of learning.

@D0M1n1C42O6 жыл бұрын
Alpha Wolf wrong, bushido is a collective name given to the samurai codes of conduct, there are a tiny amount of descendants of samurai that follow a few of these codes still, and they do influence Japanese culture and customs still. But there are no “Samurai”. The last Samurai gave up their swords in the 19th century. They were military officers that would serve a clan lord, as there are no longer lords or clans to serve, samurai would have no one to serve and no purpose. Being an officer in a clan is what made them “Samurai” or Bushi as they’re referred to in Japanese, so they cannot exist in modern day Japan, yes there are people that may live by their codes, or be masters of certain “Samurai” ways of life, but there are no Samurai.
@BrandonCase6 жыл бұрын
Yeah.. there’s a lot of purpose to the traditional techniques that he imitated (folds, etc) or left out completely (alternating high and low carbon steel for a balance of toughness and hardness, the traditional curve that lengthens the slicing edge-which is also a byproduct of quenching with the disparate steels-etc). It’s a cool project, and I’m sure he learned a lot, but anyone who knows much about katanas will see it as a gimmick/display item. If you’re interested in the process, I’d recommend you check out the Nova documentary on katana forging :).

You know what sucks in my opinion. The amount of people who couldnt appreciate the art of it all. You are a very talented person with many different skills. I was captivated the whole time. With everything from the technique, camera quality, commentary. Seeing the progression even 1 whole episode of failing at something. That is something most people would leave out, but it shows the struggle of it. 1st episode had roughly 1.7 million views when i watched it in 2019. Half way through it was cut in half just to have almost 3 million on the reveal. I know nothing about metal working or crafting in general and this series has me wanting to quit my job and learn. I cant actually do that but it was all very interesting I enjoyed seeing it to the end.

it's probably about the slight lack of respect towards his craft, too noisy and sometimes annoying, it feels like all the time, all he can think about is : oh wow this is so cool, whilst a proper japanease craftsman would be thinking something along the line of : this is so beautifull and delicate, but that's understandable it's his ver yfirst katana, he is not a master craftsman, he is just a kid, in that standard it's amazinf what he did.
@arent22955 жыл бұрын

@@youcefbehloul2254 I've practiced Japanese sword arts for 15 years, and I honestly see nothing wrong in him trying this out, and I doubt most Japanese people would be offended. It definitely looks nothing like what it's supposed to, and there's no way I'd use it during training, but I don't hold that against him. He wanted to do it, he did the thing, and it gave him so much respect for the craft. I can only see positives in this.

When I first learned to use a grinder at the age of 13 I took an iron blank and grinded it into the sharpest sword ever. It would cut through a car effortlessly. After mastering that art I moved on to welding where I would stare at the beautiful blueish white light until I became strong to it. After mastering that I moved on to mastering the cane. @FeriteKnight6 жыл бұрын
Put the handle on the sword, put your left foot on the right side of the blade at the point, (may want to put a piece of wood down to ground the point on), rest the mid of the sword on your left knee, and put your right foot around the front and push back on it with your calf to hold it in place. This works better with a scabbard. Then take the mid-point of the tsuka-ito and pull it tight around the left side of the Tsuka down by the guard, with the mid point centered on the side. Pull the wrap around and across itself, twist and reverse, then back around, twist and reverse, and so on, until you get back to the Kashira. You can adjust the wrap to close the proximity of the twists as you go, but keep it tight on the twists. It is very strenuous for the hands and really increases grip and finger strength. You never glue this on; it's meant to be removed. As you use the sword, it loosens, and you maintain regular maintenance on the sword, and this is part of it.
