@@99echo badass! I just bought an old file to get started, any tips using files?
@99echo4 жыл бұрын
@@chrisspell9695 sweet! Do you have a forge? To save time and frustration it'd be best to try and anneal the steel before you start grinding. If not then my only advice would be to use dull belts first to knock off the hard edge and then once you have a flat surface to work on, switch to a fresh one. A good thing about using files is that if you don't anneal it then it's plenty hard as is to use without heat treating.
@chrisspell96954 жыл бұрын
@@99echo I don’t have a forge unfortunately but I have been watching some diy videos to possibly build one
@99echo4 жыл бұрын
Yeah you can get away with a little insulated coffee can propane burner. Got a belt sander? I'm using a 2x42. In my opinion it was worth the jumping to instead of the 1x30 people usually start with. The disc sander combo also has come in handy multiple times.

Wonderful knife. I just received my order from Eurotechni, containing sandvik inox 10c28mo2, which I feel like purposing for a replica of your kitchen katana. Could you please tell me how long the blade is? And some 2,5 mm thick, probably? But I doubt i will get such a beautiful hamon on inox steel. Thanx in advance. TV

Hey i see that you dip it in some sort of acid, feric chloride i assume but is there any other way i can bring out the edge with more available chemicals like vinegar or something like that?

Really strong instant coffee should darken it. I haven't tried it with hamons but it works great with layered steels. Might have to play around with the polishing steps

@99echo4 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Honestly I've been going thinner and thinner seeing how much I can take off before finish grinding to save time. I'd say the thickness of a dime is safe, thinner if you can. I think it's more important to make sure you're taking of the same amount of material on each side. Get yourself a grinder! $200 2x42 on amazon.

@99echo4 жыл бұрын
Nice! I love to hear it. I get G10 from a couple places, one of them being Alpha. Another great option for composites is G-carta from Greg Hansen (just picked up a bunch of good stuff). Stabilized wood from Robs wild wood on insta is my go to. If you have any questions on your new sander let me know. I did a few upgrades that I think make it much more usable for knife making. Might make a video on it actually

Very nice knife. One thing. When you showed your forge, it looked like there was no refractory cement covering the kaowool. If you don't have refractory on your kaowool, you really should do that. You can develop pretty bad lung issues by breathing in the burnt wool.
@99echo4 жыл бұрын
Ah didn't know that, I appreciate it. I'll look into it
@99echo4 жыл бұрын
Turns out the forge I have came already sealed with rigidizer so all good. Thanks for the concern!
@simondoug4 жыл бұрын
@@99echo Rigidizer is not refractory. You can still get the lung damage. It needs to be refractory cement. All the rigidizer is doing is taking the soft wool and making it hard. It doesn't protect you from the effects of the wool being vaporized.
@99echo4 жыл бұрын
@@simondoug so just smear it on there? Can you recommend any place to find the process online? Only thing I'm finding are contradicting forums.
@simondoug4 жыл бұрын
@@99echo For sure. Look for a product called satanite. It is the go-to for refractory cements. Blacksmithdepot has it for 20 bucks. Cheap way to save your health. Plaster it in about 1/2 inch thick and let it cure for a 4 or 5 days so it is good and dry. I would also recommend you continue to use the fire brick in the bottom of your forge. If you get into forge welding, the flux can eat away at the refractory. Fire brick is cheap to replace. Chipping out refractory to replace it is a pain.
