does hammering make the steel better?
@hermanhansirahm97548 жыл бұрын
Well "hammering" is usually called forging. Making it better? not really, its mostly just to get the shape. It is cheaper forging from a bar, but if you are new to knife making it is better to use sheet metal for your knifes. Forging can be a bit hard for good results. But making the steel better. It can if you fold the steel about 10 times that gives you around 1050 layers which improves its strenght and can make it springy depending on the steel you are using.

@TristanDare8 жыл бұрын
It's actually a Stencil, that is plastic; so that you can take salt water and some sort of electric source 9v and up, and Electro-Etch the blade. Lot's of people make them, but it can be expensive. But if you search Ernies Knives, or blue lightning stencils, you can find a website where you can get them. Cheers!

Hardened yes, did you temper it?
@RealRuler21128 жыл бұрын
I was just going to ask the same thing. I was cringing as the handle was being hammered on when there was no temper shown. Another question: did it harden? I've heard that some saw blades can't be hardened except for the teeth.

Cool looking knife man! How did you gave it that dark rustic texture? And you tempered it at how many degrees and for how long?
@Anino_Makata7 жыл бұрын
E-x7 For the rustic design, if you're using an old saw, just dont touch that area when you're grinidng, heat treating, or polishing. As for the temper, I have no idea.

@steelwarrior1057 жыл бұрын
Mossine Gago finishing oil is not oil it's actually more lacquer, motor oil is a lubricant and doesn't cure. Use tung, Danish, teak, etc. If you are in Europe or don't mind paying shipping, crimson guitars in the U.K. makes some of the best finishing products in the world.

Love your work. I want to start making blades too, you've given me the inspiration now I just need the skill. Quick question. Does an old drill bit make good material for forging a blade?
@rambomode53807 жыл бұрын
Jake Rovey yes are but it is very difficult old files so much easier
@lordfluffybuns39627 жыл бұрын
Depends on the bit, but most of the time yes. it's best to uncoil the bit first, then you have rectangle stock most of the time. Hope you have fun with it!

Why do people who make knife with a tempered steel always re-temper it? If you cut it without eating it too much, there is no reason. Moreover, a steel which is too hard can break easily. Excepted those questions, it is a nice work, well done.

making is a lot different word than forging.
@Glaswalker10018 жыл бұрын
Josh Lujan Don't you say... It's a lot simpler and I like this channel because he is forging his knifes. I really don't get your point.
@joshlujan33188 жыл бұрын
i like this channel too, i'm answering your gripe you said "Stock removal and no smithing at all?" and i said "he said making" and i said making is a lot different than forging. if you do search on "making a knife" it's all stock removal. he said "making", that is my point. there is no forging when "making" a knife.
