At 8:10 you show an overhead of the main chassis. You can see the launch wheel. If I had to guess, maybe 1.5" in diameter. In the world of machining, and everything else too, there is a thing called surface footage. It boils down to getting the most from a given RPM. If you were to double, or even considerably increase the diameter of that wheel, the motor RPM would produce a much better result launching those knives. Its like sitting in the middle of a merry go round vs. running around the outside. The RPM is the same, but the speed is waaaaaaay different. Just move the motor up and use a bigger wheel and stand back. Nice job, by the way. Thumbs up.
@Nevir2023 жыл бұрын
Ya, but you're overlooking the other, more important argument for a bigger wheel, make it of steel so it would have some inertia, you can see how much that thing slows down each time it fires.
@SeanQuinn43 жыл бұрын
Came to comments to suggest both of these things 👌 slap some more weight on that wheel, use a rubber substance for grip, bingo laser knives.

Praise the algorithm for sending this into my feed! I love that you're making cool stuff without a team, and tens of millions of laser/water jet/3D printing tomfoolery, just what any average builder can get their hands on. I especially loved seeing how you seemed to make tools for the purpose of assisting you - you see a problem, you make something to help you solve it. Not talking about the knife gun, just those little incidental things you make to make making easier, if that makes sense.

Awesome as always. To the extent you ever revisit this project, you may want to add a follower to the magazine...maybe even as simple as a small wooden block being pulled down by rubber bands attached to the exterior sides of the magazine. This would apply just enough downward pressure on the knives so that they wouldn't rattle around in the magazine and would still feed correctly. This way you wouldn't be limited to holding the gu...I mean the projectile accelerator...horizontally.

Just came across your channel on my recommendations yesterday, looking forward to what you get on! Something you could do as an improvement to this would be to utilize the racking mechanism to add additional forward force. Racking back would latch a spring, racking forward would pull on the spring storing up force. Then once you have racked forward enough it would unlatch the spring letting it compress all in one go and propel the knife forward onto the wheel which can then add the additional force it can. Should be a lot more repeatable too since its not necessarily dependent on how fast you can rack it forward.

If you were ever to make a v2 of this, I'd recommend swapping the handles. Make the one you're moving be at the front and the one with the trigger at the back. Like a traditional pump action gun. With this iteration though you'll need to make the pumping part pull rather than push. I would also recommend specifically NOT to increase the speed they come out at, because that may actually bring this close to being something truly deadly.
