I think it was the stabbing, jerking and twisting that weakened the cheap cast metal by making just enough play that in conjunction with the .38 specials recoil was enough to cause the failure. Depending on if or how it was heat treated and tempered could have also contributed to it.

I'm pretty sure the chronograph was set for meters per second on that test. 167 meters per second comes out to about 550 feet per second. At under 200 feet per second, that bullet would never have had that kind of penetration in the gel.

That was my first thought as well. That's about what I'd expect from a very short-barreled .38. I'd estimate around 600 FPS out of a 2" barrel, so that totally tracks. 167 FPS is more what I'd expect from an arrow, not a bullet.

@MatthewJarvis-zw2sz
@MatthewJarvis-zw2sz Жыл бұрын
I agree, I think it was meant to be a party piece, nothing more. There is one other possibility however; the fact that Scott stuck the knife into the target and fired at the same time may have also placed extra stress on the gun, since the "forward" part that contains the blade and barrel was quite securely lodged in the pineapple, whilst the "rear" part that contains the firing chamber, breech, and handle was forced backwards by the recoil. This was obviously strong enough to separate the two pieces, and maybe the manufacturer didn't intend for the gun to be fired while stuck in a target. Perhaps as a dual purpose weapon, this gun was meant to be used as EITHER a gun or a knife at any one moment, and not both at the same time. Who knows? lol

@@newtsleatherandmetalsmithy1827 Best of luck with your Journeyman test. I think I can safely say you’ll pass with knowledge like your original comment. My grandfather taught me an elementary level of bladesmithing when I was young and I’ve occasionally dabbled in it every once in a blue moon. He used to take old railway spikes and smith them into various different things like parts of jigs needed to help with carpentry, bookmaking/book spines, and various tools like flat head screwdrivers and wrenches. We made a rudimentary, general purpose knife out of one once. It’s held up for well over ten years but can’t hold a precise edge for very long. If you wouldn’t mind me picking your brain a little, what are some things bladesmithing hobbyists should know? And for fun, what different ideas, changes, and techniques would you use if you were asked to make a knife gun like in the video?
@VaporRonin
@VaporRonin Жыл бұрын
Under normal cases, it's probably not even supposed to be used, and if it is, very little, also definitely one not to carry concealed loaded, because it's easier to set off then a gun accidentally, but the manual reload of rounds makes it subjectively safer and a form of self defense that absolutely No one should argue as it doesn't house several shots.

Not a new concept but that one looks really cool! Edit: From memory, the late 1800's one I recall seeing mentioned had a break lock device that locked to essentially be a top strap, just because of the hinge weakness. I wish I could find the reference book but it's (maybe) buried in a whole bunch of stuff we have no room to unpackage. (Also suffered from "friends" borrowing books) Also, in fairness, the model I recall was made for 2F to 3F black powder and (I think) 32cal.

Don't worry, Scott can always stick that almighty thumb in it if anything goes by the wayside, I mean he's done it once before, pretty sure he can pull it off again if he needed to. As for the knife-gun, I think it'd be more of a gimmicky weapon, you'd use it much like a knife in a fight, then when you've got a good stab in, you finish with the shot. That seems to be the idea behind this design since it did pretty decent job of digging in deep from up close.

Both of the "gun blades" from final fantasy 8 were really cool. One of them was a revolver and the other was like a semi auto pistol... the revolver was cooler to me because it seemed more practical as far as it being a real weapon... but obviously having a semi auto with a magazine would be better, but the handle is something you have to think about as a sword and a gun, and it would make sense to me for it to be like old fancy dueling pistols with the pommel style back and a almost straight handle but curved like count dooku from starwars. Which is why I preferred the main characters version which was the revolver.

Honestly, I would say it was legitimate, if it didn't break. However, that was because it was casted, not forged. Had the blade been forged along with the other simple parts, I think it could've held together better, but something that could contribute is the type of metal used. Hear me out on this, but although it would make it an expensive knife gun, titanium alloy or titanium in general, would make a great metal to withstand the recoil of .38 special, and would help contribute to the tensile strength of the blade, plus making it out of titanium makes it corrosion resistant, so you could have it around for longer periods of time.

It's fun to see that this kind of things keeps coming back up throughout history. We have surviving sword-guns, mace-guns, axe-guns... From back to the 1500's at least. There was a period in England where there were a lot of guns and concealed gun-sword-canes and the like existed. Pretty wild stuff. You could probably do a good series on weird things with guns in them. Maybe collab with a history tuber that might have access to fire something historical?

there was a lot of stuff like that but most were made as art or a show of craftsmanship. they regularly used because its the worst of both worlds. you are either gunna have a melee weapon with extra weight and bulkiness that fires not very well or a gun with extra weight and bulkiness that you can sometimes hit someone with. the best we ever came up with was bayonets, cuz it was just a spear, the all round best weapon due to how simple it is.

1500's? I know, gunpowder has a long history, but really usable handguns weren't a thing back then. They used bows and crossbows. Imagine, you have a one shot gun, that takes about a minute to reload and the cavalry is charging. You at least want a spear tip at the end of your musket. That's where it actually makes sense, to add a blade to a handgun and where the idea most likely comes from. The rest is gimmicky and useless, you're better off, buying and carrying a lighter gun and a lighter knife than a fowl compromise of both.

This is the first video I saw in this channel and I always liked the concept of a weapon like this. As described, this dagger gun seems most effective as a melee weapon with the pistol dealing a killing blow if aimed at a vital spot when fired. Since it can only hold one bullet at a time before reloading and since it's a short barrel it's definitely not built to rely on range combat.
