Making a Leather Dust Mask

This week I'm crafting a motorcycle style leather dust mask. The intent of this mask is strictly for minimizing the airborne leather dust debris in my shop. This is not a medical or construction rated respirator, but was designed to be a fun project that both looked cool and lowered the possible dust debris I would potentially be inhaling while sanding my leather goods.
Please consult the fda.gov and/or the cdc.gov websites to learn more about proper qualification requirements for masks and respirators.

EDIT Vent holes were cut by using a rotary hole punch at each end of the shape and then a knife to cut and connect the holes. Here is the tool used:

Craftsmanship of the masters. When I put on ma leather I made, and rock to sum Metallica, Delta Parole, Foo Fighters or the Smashing Pumpkins I feel like I can do anything in the whole wide world.

A small piece of leather between the elastic at elastic brad site might make that point stronger. Love the design.

I’m new at leather crafting. I purchased some leather crafting tools and I was able to repair and enhance about four or five leather watch bands. I have no prior experience and so far, I love it. Would be great if you could insert a disposable filter you know those n95 but by now they are gone in any market...

You can buy AC filters or Vacuum filters with the same ratings as an N95 mask. 3M and Honeywell have large Home AC filters at Homedepot, Lowes, Walmart and you just disassemble therm, cut them to the size u need and put them in between your face and really anything that'll hold it in place. Head scarfs, old shirts, pillow cases, sheets...

Hi! This was a Montana Tan hide I picked up at my local Tandy Leather Factory. The leather has a nice soft temper. I also used it when I made the backpack video. Thanks for asking!

Washing may warp the leather, but maybe a warm rag with some soap lightly rubbed and then wiped away. Alcohol based sanitizers may also pull out dye if the item is a dyed leather, just a heads-up. I hope this helps!

Do you know how to disinfect leather masks?

You can't really wash them in the traditional sense. I do not recommend them for sickness/illness prevention, if that is your intended purpose.

You have to use a replaceable filter, cant water it or use alcohol on it

Legacy Brand Leather I would just add velcro inside of the mask and a double layer or cotton cloth to use as a antibacterial mask. I would use it as is as a dust mask but the way things are now im sure people are looking for some sort of protection.

I've heard that some people use UV light to disinfect leather or use a small amount of alcohol to clean the surface. Then But I think the filter should be designed to be replaceable.🤔🤔

Hi. This pattern is not for the current public issue at hand. This is for the aesthetic and for a bit of dust prevention, not any sickness prevention. There are plenty of free medical face covering patterns around the web. I am a small business owner; all of my pattern sales go towards supporting my business and my family. Cheers.

Thank you for your concern. There are plenty of free templates online for medical style masks. This video was sent out with the intent to be a fun leather dust mask. I do not recommend this to be used in a medical capacity.
