Today I learned how to remove the wedge and iron from my grandfather's jointer plane! Thank you!!! It's been sitting in a box for over 50 years, and I want to restore and use it. He was a carpenter, and now I think he probably made it himself, it's only "pretty" on the bottom.

That's it! I'm going to make a plane! I found a short piece of 4x4 light colored hard wood, I'm not sure what it is. I cut it from a log years ago on my sawmill. Just so happens to be curly it would make a beautiful plane. But for my first plane, dare I take on the curly monster? My only other option from what I have on hand would be black oak.

ya the oak would work well for it. Even a piece of pine would work though it would not last as long. looking forward to seeing what you make!

My last plane build was a shoulder plane which is a bit easier because you can cut the center bit to create the bed and drill out the escapement then glue on the sides. Perhaps the next one will be a smoother or a jack plane from a single billet.

Hey James, great build, as always. I am looking forward to the final videos in this series for the details of bringing it all together. I did have a quick question though. I am considering adding this to my project list, but not sure where to get the plane iron. Is there any one in particular you would recommend? Hand planes around here are hard to find used and they all bring a premium - same price for a used one like you are making that needs a full restoration as one new from the store.

Well for new I love my Hock Irons, but for antique there is not that much difference before 1950.
