I thought it would be a lot of fun to take the concept/essence of a desert oasis and shrink it down into a mini setup. I had a lot more fun with this project than I expected, and I love the result. What do you think, though? Let me know, and have a great Sunday SerpaSquad!

I got really excited when I saw the thumbnail 🙂 For about 6/7 years I have some cacti and succulents growing in a cheap discarded fish tank. Just some big stones at the bottom for drainage, some soil and white sand, couple of smaller stones and a wooden cover to prevent my cat from doing stupid things. Didn't really know what I was doing at the time so every time I check it I'm still surprised to see how well everything is growing. Got in a couple of cacti grown from seeds that are now about 20 cm in height. Have to start thinking about a version 2 now. Edit: forgot to tell you I wouldn't mind more of these builds 🙂

Super cool! I love how much attention to detail and effort you put into all of your builds!! I haven't seen a single one of your videos I didn't like!! I think this was an awesome build, all the design elements really came together. I really hope you think about doing this in a large scale tank, like four foot or more. It would be epic!

You’re the reason I started making terrariums about a year ago. I discovered you about a year and a half ago, binged all of your video’s & now I catch myself buying different glass containers at thrift shops, anything uniquely shaped, picking up random sticks/ rocks and always scoping for places with a bunch of moss. I have so many random things with a different idea attached to them in my craft room. I have a tall fish tank I plan on going full serpa on one day when I feel like I’ve gained more skills and knowledge but for now my little glass jars & containers will do. Thank you for giving me a new hobby / art to explore 🩵

I wasn't sure at first at the tall versus wide choice of tanks for this, but your Mini Desert Oasis build worked out wonderfully, nicely balanced and geometrically striking. The layout of the choya wood and pagoda stones just perfect, and red shrimp shows a nice contrast.

I'd be interested to see a desert tank that simulates the Australian outback, where conditions are dry and almost lifeless for most of the year. However, during the wet summer, receive copious amounts of rain that could spring the rank to life for a short period each year.

Check out "Simulating a Desert for 100 Days" by Dr Plant, it's a similar concept to that tho not Australian specific

I have encountered natural springs in the Sonoran Desert (which is part of the native range for a lot of cholla cactus species, where we get cholla wood from). The one I liked visiting the most was shaded with mesquite trees and was the only place where I saw green grasses and mosses during 119F heat waves. The springs were covered in algae and mosses. There actually weren't a whole lot of cactuses near the streams, like because their roots couldn't take the level of moisture. That being said, this was still a neat build!
