Sup folks!
Had a few mishaps in my shop and needed a new 4-jaw chuck. Now we're gonna make a new backplate for it! 😃
A big thanks to Harold over ‪@AmateurRedneckWorkshop‬ as well as @Kimberzelik Zelik for the heaping pile-o-stickers 😁. And an extra big thanks to all you awesome subscribers! You make it all worthwhile!
Cheers!

Absolutely brilliant work, and grace under pressure with that center punch save! Smart boy... I'll have to remember that trick. And I got a kick out of every shock take at the stickers... even at the last one, it was still funny. 😂

Atlas Lathes - damned by Professionals, but loved by their owners ! My brother and I have made gun parts, car parts, fixed all sorts of around-the-house items that needed a lathe - We jointly have a 6" and a 10" Timken bearing lathes, and they are fantastic !

I had to make the same backing plate for my atlas lathe. I'm not comfortable doing single point threading, I found a 1 1/2 -8 tap on ebay with shipping for right at $20. I'm hanging on to that! Good video! Dan From Oregon

I'm so glad you pensioned off that manky old 4 jaw. The new one is so much shinier, and more importantly, not from China! So, it'll probably last more than 5 minutes. God job on the internal thread. Just by coincidence, I did one yesterday using Joe's reverse from a hard stop method.

Yeah, the ol' girl served me well but still may be of some use. I'm thinking weld positioner maybe 😊. Using a new one is taking some getting used to lol. I really like that method of threading although I think my execution of it could use some fine tuning 🤣. Thanks, Preso! Take care, Cheers! 😁

Nice job man. Not sure I should be above ARW but I will take it, lol. Congrats on 1500. It's amazes me that something so simple is actually a pretty complex and precision project. I ran into the same kind of time consuming stuff when making my 4 jaw backplate and I did not even have to do the big threads. The displacement idea was certainly a project saver and a good idea. All the best! Eddie

Good Video! Next time you have to deal with mill scale soak it in white vinegar for a day, Walmart has 5%. The mill scale is converted to something that you can more or less wash off. For flat surfaces I rinse then it give it a light pass with a palm sander. Looks like cold rolled. I suppose if your going to machine the surface there is no point in doing more then rinsing it. I have an atlas 10" with babbitt bearings. I bought a six jaw. It holds the works much better but the extra stick out from the front bearing reduces rigidity. Have you notice similar?
@Just1GuyMetalworks

Yeah that does work good. That ductile iron has some pretty thick scale, worth a try though 😊. Thanks, Dan! Cheers!

I'm not sure you can run a babbitt head fast enough to really make use of carbide. They need a lot more surface speed than you expect, and a more aggressive cut. I have to run mine at absolute max speed to get good results, and with a cut aggressive enough to be right on the ragged edge of stalling at any time. Also- there really is a big difference between Chinesium carbide and American / European / Israeli stuff. If I just need a cut, I'll use a $6 Chinesium insert. If I need a *pretty* cut, I'll pull out a $65 Seco or ISCAR insert, and it looks like a damn mirror.
@noiwonttellyoumyname.4385
@noiwonttellyoumyname.4385 2 жыл бұрын
Also- is that your countershaft making the rattling noise?
@Just1GuyMetalworks
@Just1GuyMetalworks 2 жыл бұрын
Well, the ol' girl was capable of doing 2200rpm in her prime lol. Watching the video myself made me wonder if increasing the feed rate might have helped. Gotta swap change gears every time so I just keep it at .0033" per rev. I don't really use inserts much but I'll have to set aside a day to do some experimentation 😊. Don't think I'll be dropping $65 on an insert any time soon though 😉.
@Just1GuyMetalworks
@Just1GuyMetalworks 2 жыл бұрын
Most likely the back gears slapping around lol. Although that counter shaft is in the process of being replaced. Also gotta make up a spacer for the spindle assembly. So that sound could be the dogs on the small back gear and pulley. Either way, drives me nuts too, just trying to find the time to fix it 😏. Cheers!
@noiwonttellyoumyname.4385
@noiwonttellyoumyname.4385 2 жыл бұрын
@@Just1GuyMetalworks Y'oughta do an electric lead screw, then you can vary the feed rate however you want. On the fly, even. Re: countershaft- I gotta get around to replacing mine at some point, too. Just got too many projects going all at the same time right now. Been looking at just picking up 18" of precision-ground shaft and getting some needle-roller bearings, thrust washers, and a couple of shaft collars to stuff in some new housings. Seems like that should solve the problem for me well enough, and also keep from slinging oil all over my wall when I run the lathe. The back gear thing, though... that's another thing I gotta deal with. Mine doesn't like to stay engaged. Gotta figure out why, and tighten it up.
