Consummate craftsmanship. Accurate and beautiful tool making using differing materials, is the ultimate in show crafting ones skills. To know that those tools will most likely be used and still serving their purpose long after we are gone, is satisfying. You are leaving your mark. Great job.

Very nice. Surprised to see the wood produce such stringy swarf. You have good balance with real time and ffwd in your editing too. Thanks for sharing this. Look forward to your next one.
@JimmysCanal

Owen Giles Thanks Owen! I was surprised also, by the swarf. I turned the wood with same tool bit on the Diamond tool holder, I use for turning brass. I think the density of the wood itself and the sharp edge of the tool, helps producing stringy swarf. As for video editing, I'm trying, not to bore with repeating procedures. Any suggestions are welcome!! Thanks again. All the best Jimmy

Beautiful. I am old enough to remember using plumb bobs building houses and decks before lasers became affordable. I use lasers a lot now for speed, but I still have my 3 plumb bobs to check them for accuracy. All of mine are plain old Stanley, Belknap (I think) and a no name I can't seem to find a match for anywhere so it may be a one of a kind, but it is not anywhere as beautiful as the pair you made. Those will be heirlooms to be proud of.

Another pair of masterpieces my friend! Great job on the bump knurling, that copper can be tricky & sticky. Impressed with the inverted tools on 304 too and seemed you made the jump to 1k grit pretty quickly. Just the Best! Thanks for sharing these with us! ~PJ

pjsalchemy Thanks for your comment and support, my friend! And thanks for your great work on the knurling calculator. Hope you upload it soon on your web page, so everyone can use it easily- don't forget to have one in metric also :) The inverted parting blade gives excellent results, with only a touch up on the bench grinder! Glad to share. Thanks again. Your friend Jimmy

Lovely work, as usual. I don't know if you know the old woodturner's trick of using the wood shavings, after abrasives, to burnish the wood you are turning? Anyway it leaves a highly polished surface. Another thing is be careful drilling hard woods, as you found the drill flutes easily clog with hard crud, this can easily lead to over heating the wood which will often cause cracking. If you do get cracking, another old-ish woodturner's trick is to put some super glue in the crack and rub some of the wood dust in it to fill the crack more or less invisibly. ATB and I hope you are coping OK with financial meltdown. chris
@JimmysCanal
@JimmysCanal 9 жыл бұрын
Chris Stephens Hi Chris, Thanks for the comment and the tips!! I must admit, that I didn't expect to see the flutes clogging on the bigger drill (11mm), because I had already opened the hole. It seems that I judged wrong! I 'll be more careful in the future. Lucky enough, no cracks on the wood. All this economic issue sends my country back to the "Stone Age". And mostly affects small people like me. Everyone here is trying to hold on as best as they can. Thank you for your kind thought! Wish you the best Jimmy

Hi Jimmy, this is the first of your videos that I have seen, I like it a lot, and I think the Plumb Bob is a lovely thing. Varnish is tough, but you might like the sheen and wear properties of using Carnauba Wax. Thanks
@JimmysCanal
@JimmysCanal 9 жыл бұрын
Jesse Searls Hi Jesse, Thank you for the comment and the tip! To be exact, I used clear varnish on the plumb bob with the brass fittings and camellia oil for the other. I did this just to see if there would be any difference in the appearance of wood grain. I can't say that I'm very satisfied with the end result on either cases. Both wood pieces are darker and is difficult for someone to see the wood grain. I know a shop here that has all kinds of special varnishes and waxes for wood turners. I'll ask for Carnauba wax, to try it. Thanks again for the tip! All the best Jimmy

***** Jimmy, thanks for the reply. I appreciate it. I got my info on the Carnauba from the wood turning world. I make my own wax from Linseed, Beeswax and Carnauba, but I think for your use there is a Carnauba stick that you rub onto the piece while it's turning in the lathe, if should come up really shiny. Carnauba is the toughest natural wax, and forms the basis of a lot of old school waxes, including Gun Wax. I like it as I am kind of old school, and you can always re-apply it. I think it is also used in the restoration business to maintain the patina on bronze castings. You'll find heaps about it. PS, I'm kind of intrigued by your silent air compressor, I just spent big bucks to get a screw compressor - as I want piece and quiet in my studio workshop.... sorry, I don't have pictures to share - I'm not so good with that.
@JimmysCanal
@JimmysCanal 9 жыл бұрын
Jesse Searls Hey Jesse, I found that the Carnauba wax is collected from the leaves of the Brazilian Carnauba palm. Distinguished among the natural waxes for its great hardness and for its high melting temperature. Definitely I'll try it. I also found this link: www.dictum.com/en/surfaces/surface-protection-colours/waxes Glad you like "the silent compressor" project. Thanks again for your great comments and tips! I appreciate it. All the best Jimmy P.S. You can find my email address in the "info" page on my channel. When you have spare time, send me if you want some pictures of your projects.

OK, I'll track you and send some stuff to you. I am big on Carnauba. If you work it hard, you can get a brilliant shine - not easy though, and it can be used to make really good shoe polish. In the old days, M&Ms and Smarties, and other things were made shiny by tumbling them in Carnauba. So - you can eat it. Try gillystephenson.com.au for pure Carnauba if you live in Aust. Ciao for now

Is there a reason why you switch to the diamond insert at 8:04? Was it because of interference with the live center?
@JimmysCanal
@JimmysCanal 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for asking. Yes, because as you said was interfered with the live center. Unfortunately, because of its size the diamond tool holder couldn't reach closer to the shaft. The ideal if I had would be a half dead center! All the best Jimmy
