I think I would of used an extra hole in the slide as you did but hide the lock in plain site by using another screw long enough to go into the secret compartment. Not as elaborate and probably not as good of a video but practical and quick. That's why I'm on this side of the screen and you're the one making while I'm watching.
@sienile

I had a similar idea for the latch mechanism that wouldn't require an additional pin to open the compartment. Put screws in the holes you dowelled, but one screw would be put in a dowel. The dowel would need to be fully removed to open the compartment, but it could be opened by simply pouring it out by the screw head with your fingernail. For additional security you could have a small magnet on the inside end of the dowel that would hold against the non-moving screw.

You'll never get all your $1000 bills into that wee drawer. I loved the drawer, it's really tidy work. I am really excited.

Glad you have not edited that out from the clip. And of course thanks for sharing great craftsmanship and genious simplicity of the locking mechanism.

I like how you used double sided storage to make the best use of space in the cabinet! BUT (there's always a but) putting your clamps up there might end up making for empty space knowing how you "always" put your tools away (yea right) - haha. Celine Dion and Monopoly money were great choices to put in the secret compartment. Now if you forget where the secret compartment is and how to open it (like me) they will forever be safe!

Regarding blade heights, use a riving knife with a guard in case you are concerned about security. Always run you saw blades with as much clearance above your work piece as possible since they then will run cooler and last much longer!

Do you think you can put a spring between the right drawer piece and the dowel? So you dont need to use a pin on the other side? An then maybe drive a screw into the left side of the dowel, and open it by pushing that?
@IBuildIt
@IBuildIt 7 жыл бұрын
Could, but then need to find a spring the right size and spend extra time fine tuning to make sure it actually pushes the dowel. And sometime down the road it may stop working. Better to keep it simple.

Anyone who you are going to invite to your shop will know you have this "secret" compartment now that you have told the world about it. I know some people have posted similar comments to this but I find it funny that you are worried about the contents falling out when you are showing someone your shop. They will probably ask about your secret compartment and if you can show them how it is holding up.

I built a bookcase that opened to a hidden room. My son, when a teen, was having a rowdy party while wifey and I were out. The cops were called by a neighbor and they came to address the complaint. My son had everyone hide in the secret room. My son simply said there was no one there. The police searched and were baffled when they couldn't find anyone. Yes, everyone loves secret hide-a-ways and drawers. Just look at some really old furniture. BTW, I enjoyed the video.
