I'm new at fishing with an arrow - I'm going to use my slingbow - this should work very nice - But I think I will down size the diameter of the reel a bit. Thanks great vid - helped me understand a bit more about this type of fishing.

Hey BackyardBowyer would you happen to be able to make a(n) bowfishing arrow?
@larrywhalen1274 жыл бұрын
Just for info - you can pick up a 27" by 5/16" plastic rod for a set of vertical blinds which is a good size for a bow fishing arrow and by using a 1 1/2" section of aluminum, copper or brass you can then fit a 1 1/2" length of solid aluminum rod or the smooth section of a shoulder bolt which can be turned to a sharp point with a hand drill and a file and then 320 sand paper (note 3/4" will fit each piece such as the rod and arrow's shaft) the metal tip and "coupler" should be soldered or JB Welded and the arrow and corresponding section of the coupler sanded, cleaned with alcohol and then epoxied together - after that get a 3" piece of metal clothes hanger and drill a corresponding hole in what is now you arrow's point then insert the piece from the hanger through it and bend backwards at a 30 degree angle. After that you could either solder or JB weld it so it will not swivel OR you can leave it as is so you can push it through the fish, pivot it towards the point and yank it back through the fish. Actually a piece of stainless steel for the barb is better as it is stronger and will be less likely to eventually bend. A couple of other things is to sand or file a 15 to 30 degree angle at the front of the coupler so it will cleanly penetrate the fishes scales and not be impeded by a blunt edge. After that install a safety slide and vanes (if you prefer vanes on you bow fishing arrows or bolts); I use a small round ring for holding your keys and a 3/4" by 3/32" stainless rod as the rear stop which is placed 2.5" to 3" forward of the end of your arrow or 1.5" if it's a bolt. I personally prefer at least fifty feet of 50# test fishing line since anything further than that is not in my book. Thinking about putting up a video on this but have to find my video camera first since it was packed away about twenty years ago when the last of my kids became adults and started their own families, so if I get a few responses one of these days I will do just that - a "how-to" video that is. Hope this helped, because it is the simplist and just about the most economical way I've seen so far and can be done with a hand drill, a nail in lieu of a center punch, and a hack saw or small pipe cutter, a pair of pliers, and a file and/or sand paper.

Is that an Onieda Kestrel or an oneida eagle? That bow is actually used on the TV Show Arrow
@BackyardBowyer10 жыл бұрын
It's an Oneida Tomcat. It's a lot longer than the Eagle bows, almost 50 inches from tip to tip.
@CrescentStarSoldier10 жыл бұрын
Ahh ok how much did it cost? Because Oneidas are usual very expensive
@BackyardBowyer10 жыл бұрын
It's an older model. You can usually find one for around $150 or so. It's a good idea to get it checked out or be prepared to do some repairs/adjustments yourself.

BackyardBowyer Hey Nick, Great vid as usual! Never done the bow fishing thing before but looks pretty fun. Say, i HAD to ask and get your opinion, what do you think about the possibility of making a PVC spear gun for free divers? lol Mabe im asking a dumb question but hey why not? I mean that cross bow you made while back looked a lot more complex then a standard band gun? I know Hawaii has a hard core spear fishing community, i thought maby you would have some insight on this idea?

why do u make it so big?
@BackyardBowyer4 жыл бұрын
A big reel has less wraps of line around it than a smaller one for the same length of line. This makes it less likely to tangle and also faster to reel in by hand while a fish is pulling on the line. Thanks for watching!
