The first in a series of videos on building a band saw mill. You can follow along with this build on my website forum:
www.ibuildit.ca...
The idea is to make the mill quickly, just to get the hard maple logs cut into lumber, then dismantle the saw. I'm trying to use just the materials I have on hand already to build this, keeping in mind that it only has to work for a limited time.
I'm making this project over the course of several days, and will be releasing videos as I get parts done.
Editing and putting together a video can often take longer than the project itself, so that's why I'm doing it this way, rather than waiting until the end to make a single, long video.

17 people didn't listen to John's advice to just go away if you don't like what you see. Great videos always John! Your skill, personality, and creative editing is a pleasure. Thanks!

Will be following this one closely for sure. Top of my list of projects to get done this summer is a small bandmill. Already got an 8HP gas engine for it for free.

From what I see in the video it looks like a silver maple from bark and size of the tree and rotting from the inside close to the trunk. At least that is what they look like in the upper midwest. Looking forward to the next video!

+Jon Watson Pretty sure it's sugar maple, but I've been wrong before. The tree is not in leaf yet, so that would be the best way to tell. Lots of sugar maple here, but (as far as I know) not as many silver maple.

Not to sound like a baby, but that's a lot of hard work! It will suck the whole time, and then 2-3 years later, when you have a giant pile of maple stock, it will be so worth it. I did a black walnut in 2013, and now I have more than I can use. It's been great.

+pocket83 Hard work is what's been missing from my life lately, so I'm sort of looking forward to it. If this is sucessful (as in, if I can cut up enough lumber with it), I'll likely make a quick and dirty solar kiln to speed up the dry time.

drill through an old CD. The reflection will help u determine if it is perpendicular

@blackoak4978

+Steve Gores-Todd To help line up a drill bit vertically without a drill press put down an old CD. U will see a reflection of the bit in the CD. When the bit and reflection are perfectly lined up u know u are perpendicular to the surface, then u just drill through the CD into what u are working on. Down side is this only tells u if u r lined up side to side, u still have to be careful about towards and away

I'm very, very interested in this, John. I know that you're building this for a one-time-use situation, but I'm sure my question is relevant to a more permanent build. That question is, what kind of RPM are you shooting for on your 16" wheels? Is there a "golden range" that band saws or band saw mills operate at? I'm seriously looking into making a small band saw mill using a small gas engine, so any insight you may have would be very valuable to me. Thanks for posting this! It's very cool already!
@IBuildIt
@IBuildIt 8 жыл бұрын
+Mark Lindsay I'm shooting for 2500fpm for the blade speed. Faster will cut faster, but needs a lot more power and built better to keep the blade on the wheels. I thought about getting a gas engine for this, but really it would be better for a more permanent build.

Speaking of drill press chucks, mine is absolute rubbish. Its not well aligned, and I can bend the key before it grips the bit properly. Its an older craftsman drill press. Can you recommend a decent replacement for it? Unlike yours, the drill press itself has the tapered shaft, and that goes into the chuck. The taper seems to be straight still, despite excessively large amounts of violence trying to remove the chuck Thickest part of the taper is ~15.6mm Thinnest part of the taper is ~14.5mm Length of tapered section is ~23.8mm Cool channel, subbed :)

Reaction and juvenile wood is prevalent in branches. In turn making branches only really good for firewood. You should really seal the end grain of the branches and get them off the ground asap. Glenn
