T Harrison well, in my experience, I tend to quench it in squirrel blood. squirrel's are quick animals. but I cant guarantee the +5, it could be more or less, i tend to role a d10 to find the dexterity bonus it will give. but to each their own.

Beautiful looking dagger Garrin. My only problem is that, as is, the wire looks a wee bit tacky. something I've found that works great is to file grooves for it into the wood of the handle, while applying the leather, start from the bottom and as you finish placing the leather, wrap some of the twine into the groove. do this ll the way up, and cut the little excess at the top before doing the full holding wrap. When you take it off, you will have nice grooves that you can lay the wire into so it doesn't looks so uncomfortable. Either way, sorry to nitpick, you do excellent work. ATB.

Try some lighter fluid on a q-tip to clean up your wax forms. The naphtha in the fluid will "flow" the surface of the wax and it makes smoothing out tool marks way easier. Much easier than trying to grind or polish them out of the cast metal piece. Just soak the q-tip and wipe it over the rough surface, the fluid does most of the work. Just practice a little to see how it affects your medium.

Maybe that's why I always play the weapon/armor smith in any RPG I'm given the option too. wow, that turned out beautifully! You did such a great job forging that to shape, not to mention those perfectly forged (IMO) plunges, they have a very nice curve/radius to them. I still suck a forging nice plunge lines/ricassos as well as bevels. I have never been all that sure what angles to hold the hammer as well as the blade at, but your description has helped a bit. What angles would you hold each one at to get a good 45 degree at the edge started so I could move up the blade from there? Also any tips to be able to improve keeping the edge centered? Anyway thanks for sharing, I'd love to see more bladesmithing vids from you! Maybe forging a nice bowie or hunter even would be great to watch. Take care! :)

Pretty efficient work - i average about 20-30 hours a knife with one edge, but a lot of that is polishing. Excellent idea of using your forge as a foundry - i'll definitely be doing that. Great job. Would it be better to use solid wood and fit it on before you add the pommel? I think some handles also use rivets through the tang, not necessary but another way to do it maybe. Very impressive work overall, the only thing I can think of that might make it even nicer is to do some precious stone inlay or something, some lapis lazuli or alabaster and then give it a name. Great job again, thanks for sharing your process.

that white PVA you're using on the inside of the hilt, and on the leather contains acidic phenols, which can cause corrosion problems on the tang (and to a degree the hilt castings) over time. (I'm slightly wary of the wood used too. dark, high tannin woods also cause corrosion.) If you can get it, I'd strongly recommend a hide glue. "Titebond liquid hide glue" works very nicely, and is affordable - most importantly, its far less corrosive. Smells vile, though. also I'd suggest your method of making the hilt itself could be made much easier for you. Instead of trying to eyeball it, holding the two sides of the grip together and test-fitting it constantly, a far more effective way is to drill 4 1/8th holes through the wood of the two sections, either side of the tang, and then pin them with dowels. Then when you take it off and reassemble it without the hilt in the way, the dowels act as guide pins so it all goes together exactly aligned. lets you take the core, put it together, and shape it as one part on a belt sander, or use rasps. That will let you make it much more rounded, an oval section instead of the very square, blocky shape that one has. Makes the thing far more ergonomic in the hand, but most importantly, makes it vastly easier to make the things. Other than that, its quite pretty.
