Roses are readily available year-round at even the grocery store. Every now and then, Rajiv makes a very elaborate 'Rose Dome'. This technique can also be used to make an arrangement with just a single bunch or roses, in a much smaller container.

I was taught that when you cut a rose the stem immediately “takes a breath” and if you cut them in the air, the stem will “inhale” an air bubble. When that rises to the top you see the rose bend over like a candy cane. So you should cut the rose under water so they take a sip instead and the stem is completely hydrated.

It doesn’t matter. When you cut them 45 angle put them to water at once. It rather depends on freshness of flowers.

This is correct, but more importantly; using warm to hot water for roses will help them take up water better.

This brings back memories! I did my undergrad at Oklahoma State University and I was already accepted to a PhD program my last semester and did not have major requirements left. I took a floral arrangement class as an elective because I love flowers and design - we had the same advice about cutting stems under water. This class was in the horticulture department which makes a lot of sense, given how much science is involved in plant cultivation and farming. Amongst many [male] farming science majors, this class had a reputation for being an "easy A." It was really sweet how the young men in my class would make amazing arrangements and then would announce to each other at the end of class, "my Momma will love this," or "this is for my girl." No shame in creating something beautiful, yet flowers are so taboo to our trad concepts of masculinity.

Taking this in mind, I assume the breath occurs when the rose is 1st cut from the bush as well? Does this mean twice it’s done this? 🥀

I love how he encourages the purchase of flowers not only for special occasions, honestly which is mostly marketing. In his other videos, he also cultivates the idea we should always use our ‘nice things’ and not just tuck them away for special events. Beauty and practicality can coincide, and I think he is a great example of showing us that ❤

Tips to make your flowers last longer: (I've had roses last 3 weeks plus 2 days) inspect flowers when buying, as old bunches are often mixed in with new. Condition flowers by cutting stems and removing ALL leaves that would be below the water, and then place in fresh, cool water for at least 1 hour. Then arrange your flowers in your display container, giving the stems a fresh cut, to the desired length. Keep the arrangement as cool as possible! The roses that lasted 23 days were kept in my bedroom, where the window never closes. Hot, dry living rooms are about the worst place to have flowers. At least put the flowers in a cool place at night if possible. It is NOT necessary to cut stems under water, but keep roses as cool as possible! 🌹

When Easter Sunday passed, I wasn't ready to stop having fresh flowers (hyacinths in a pot this time of year for me). I wished that Easter should last longer, and then it struck me that it probably does....so I Googled and learned that traditionally the "Easter Season" includes two more Easter-related holy days. Folks would wish one another "Happy Easter" all throughout. In 2024 it goes until MAY 19th. So now I'm buying fresh flowers every week and treating myself well for the whole season. LOVE IT! (I observe Christmas until January 6th .... and then count the days until Candlemas day -- big dinner with a multitude of candles. There are seasonal meanings to all of these, which helps tie us closer to nature. )

Some tips: 1. Start with where you want your highest flower to be to create a more consistent shape. 2. You don’t really want to pull the flowers back out of the Oasis to alter the shape because that leaves a hole in the foam that the flower can’t effectively drink from anymore. Source: My florist mom yelling at me when I work for her. 🤣

Beautiful arrangement and wonderful instruction, Rajiv! 😍You could potentially get an even longer-lasting arrangement by using chicken wire (I acknowledge you mentioned you usually use chicken wire.) It's not as easy in the style (stunning!) vase you've made, but that's the fun challenge, in my opinion. Oasis is a toxic, microplastic material that the floral industry is really trying to educate people to move away from - and it does come with the convenience or ease factor as a trade-off. It would be so fun to do a collaborative floral instruction video with you!

@floraluxla

@@m.maclellan7147 hmmm, I’m not sure exactly what you’re talking about, but I would venture to guess that a sponge wouldn’t hold the weight of most stems and wouldn’t be a renewable or biodegradable material. Agrawool is an environmentally friendly Oasis alternative, but it only works with certain flowers and specific applications. So I just use chicken wire or curly willow mainly. 🙃

I've always loved flower arranging. My first job was cutting flowers from the owners field and selling them at the farmers market in bouquets. It was heaven in that field. There is a show in San Francisco that takes Paintings and shows them with a florists creation based on the painting. It's called bouquets to Art. The most stunning bouquet I remember was a painting of a beautiful elegant woman and a flower arrangement accompanying it looking just like the ladies figure in colors, including her head. I've never forgotten that.
