I wrap up the sawmill project in this last installment of the series. At the end of the video are rough plans with all the specific dimensions that I used in the building process. I did most of this kind of my head as I went, which isn't ideal, but drawing up the plans was fun. Message me if you want me to send them to you.

I actually considered something very much like this, a heavy fabric that was on a roll, but after having worked in it through all the seasons now, including some very heavy snow storms, the dead air inside seems to keep the snow and rain from blowing in. it never really gets wet or snowy.

Nice neat work. Depending on your winters, you may want to consider adding a curtain on the front, like would be used on a livestock barn. Roll it up most of the time, but it would keep snow or rain from blowing in and keep the operator a little warmer. Nuisance to work around it when loading or unloading the mill, but a few days out of the year it would be a nice addition.
@BusHuxley
@BusHuxley 5 жыл бұрын
That is a good suggestion and one that I puzzled over at great length last winter when I was building it, but after a few giant snow storms I determined that it doesn't need one, as for some reason, the snow and rain don't really blow into that space. I think it is a function of the mass of dead air trapped by the three sides.

If it ever does run a steel cable at the top right with turnbuckles and thread a heavy tarp through the holes on the cable. Weigh down the bottom with anything and slide it to the end like a shower curtain when in use. Works well.

Bus, I took your advice and checked out part 4 of the saw shed sequence. Yes, I see, if I squint a bit, the wire/cable you installed diagonally across your huge door. But I have another idea I'll put into your head, that your saw dust collection wall reminded me of. Now I have no idea of how much milling you do and thus how much sawdust you make, but I have seen videos of people who have Woodmizer mills who remove that plastic sawdust spout, clamp a C-clamp to the opening, and then hang a bucket to collect the dust. One person had a barrel into which he would pour the dust into. At which point, if you burn wood for heating, you could turn that dust into pellets and heat with it. Just a thought. Of course I don't know if you heat your house with wood, but it would seem like a shame for someone who has a saw mill to not use his scrapes to heat with. ;^)
@BusHuxley
@BusHuxley 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I've seen that too. While I do heat with wood and I use the slabs to make maple syrup this mill is at the farm that I work at and we use the dust for livestock and chickens. I have thought about the pellet maker thingy.

@BusHuxley
@BusHuxley 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks a lot. I milled everything in the absolute dead of winter up here in Maine when there is relatively low moisture content in the wood to begin with. But I accounted for the inevitable shrinkage in boards and the minor shrinkage in beams. It is ok to have some air movement through the gaps. Thanks for the question.

Bus, do you have a use for your saw dust? I have been thinking about turning mine into wood pellets and using them for a heat source. Possibly in my wood working shop. The mill however is producing more than I can burn in a year, so looking for something else to use them for to produce another income stream.

One of these days ill tuck into learning that program and just love it. If i can figure out editing software then i can do that, right? Sketchup is very addictive. But that's only because with it, you can test any idea you've ever had. Personally, I've modeled my entire property as exactly as I could (laser level, etc.). Including underground pipping, wires, and drainage. Now I can look at, measure things to see if I have room for whatever. And then there's my tools. I don't have a saw mill, but if I did, I'd have it modeled up in as exact a detail as I could manage, so I could test mods and such. One piece of advice though, use groups and not components. You'll soon understand what this means in Sketchup, but components never seem to completely let go of their "group", which makes latter editing a real pain..

Sketchworks is good fun and useful but ultimately limited. The main issue is the difficulty in converting to CAD in the free version. As AutoCad is free, universal, more powerful and free I would take the effort to learn that instead. Less intuitive but much quicker when you get the knack. Thanks for posting, I could do with something similar for my mill but concrete is the biggest hassle/expense - how thick was you slab and does it have mesh/fibre. Cheers

Thank you very much. It's a good question. So at the time of siding, we weren't sure what the next step was going be, as far as more sheathing or as was. We didn't know if the weather was going to beat the sides and leak in, and I thought we'd wait until it saw some storms first. It turns out, the overhand keeps it dry even in ripping storms so we arnt going to shingle it, or board and batten it yet. If the building ever gets repurposed then I suspect it'll get closed in tight. Horizontally, we could cover more ground with less cuts. Thanks for the question.

How did you cut 26&27’ long beams on your mill? What is the length capacity of your mill. Nice building.
@BusHuxley
@BusHuxley 6 жыл бұрын
The capacity is only 20' but yes I did mill that on the LT 35. It was a bit cumbersome, but not wholly impossible. The log i used was 27'" wide at the butt and 26'6" long. It was too heavy to lift with the forks, but the hydraulics on the mill hoisted it up onto the rails. I had the butt facing the engine side and had the 6 plus feet hanging off the far end. I would make a pass to the end of the rail and then with the running chainsaw, but the slab off and muckle it away. Then i would reset and roll the log and repeat until i had a 20' 10"x16" with a 6' round stock still on the end. I then ripped with a chainsaw one side of that flat. I then rolled the whole thing back towards the motor so the cut end stuck through the opening under the motor and over the levers. Then proceeded to mill that last 6' feet to the same dimension. then i cut off a few gigantic 1 by boards. i had the camera set up and rolling with a dead battery. of course. Show less

How long is the big beam across the front and what species of wood is it. I had a tornado come through and ripped up my shed. It was a metal car port I had a 21 foot opening in on each side for loading and unloading the mill.
@BusHuxley
@BusHuxley 6 жыл бұрын
It is clear Eastern White Pine and it is 26'4" long. 8" wide and 14" tall. It was a little bit of work to mill is out as we don't have that extra set of rails on the LT 35, but it was doable. Really shitty to hear about your shed being taken down by a tornado! Terrifying. I would like to think that this would hold up to a hurricane, but who knows. I anchored the posts with a bunch of concrete lags and the sheer weight of it! So I have a clear opening of 26' wide and 12' high. Very very little rain or snow gets into the shed, amazingly. Thanks for the comment.
