My only negative comment would be about the strap. I very much like the bag itself. I especially like the closure. I believe that's called a Sam Brown button.

I like the strap. I could easily adjust something like that to fit my height, and cut off the extra. And there's no buckle to get hung on delicate clothing.

It may be a "simple" bag but there is absolutely nothing simple about making it. The whole process was intricate, really intrigued and have a whole new respect for those who make leather goods by hand.

Thank you for a very informative video with NO annoying chatter. This is one of the few vids where I did not have to mute the sounds and listen to painfully boring and slow dialogue on how to construct this purse. I would be very interested in seeing a vid on how to make an organizer purse, with a wallet section built into the interior or on the outside of the purse. Thanks!

That's a beautiful piece and the workmanship is exquisite and fascinating to watch. My only issue is with the knots stopping the strap on the inside. I expected a more elegant system in keeping with the rest.

I know I’m late commenting on this but I’ve watched this several times and it’s in my “saved” file. It’s in there because I am a huge fan of the way you do your work. You layout your patterns to make the very best use of your leather with such minimal waste. Not doing so drives me nuts. So much went into producing the leather we use and to be wasteful is just disrespectful to me. Your use of a coin to make your corners. It is such a simple “low tech” way of doing it but it works perfectly - why mess with that. The way you mark your stitch line BEFORE you bevel your edges and lastly but not finally (because there’s a hundred other things you do that really inspire me) the way you do your saddle stitch. Consistently traditional. I’m just a HUGE fan.

You learn all the time. I agree very easy way shown how to do and nice video. Gary, can you tell me what type of thread you used. just exact one you use and brand. I do sometimes leather work and learned from internet video and pictures. also you used glue(type and brand name). I used diff. glues and recently bought Ecoweld glue from Tandy and not bad. Thanks for nice video.
@garyipip
@garyipip 9 жыл бұрын
Bazlur Rahman Thank you!!! The thread I used is 210D (approx. 2mm thick) waxed polyester thread, I brought it from a local store, definitely made in china, nothing special. The glue is a Hong Kong brad called "Rubstik Tropic Contact Adhesive", definitely made in china as well, cheap and it gets the job done, but it gets thicker after a few time of use, so if you can find something good from Tandy, that's great!!! happy stitching!!!

Thanks for advice. I use Tandy stuffs all the time and also import from USA or Japan or China online. After reading in blogs everybody told that best one by Kach company Ritza tiger thread or ordered them . I have to make good ones to sell them in ebay and online. I have made and sold something before, but mostly I sell shaving stuffs made by me and have ebay and etsy store. I learnt everything watching video from youtube and online(self learner and got some hints from your video too) handcraftedbybazlur.com/

Beautiful piece. The only thing I am not a huge fan of is the strap but still great. Also I would add a French binding or turn over binding to the front piece (not the flap) so that you would see some of the pig skin binding from the front I think that would look awesome. But with all that said you gave me some great ideas and made an awesome piece.

Water. It's used to soften the grain for burnishing. Burnishing is the rubbing with the stick. This is done to heat up the leather slightly by friction and compress the fibres of the edge. When the water evaporates the fuzzy grains shrink, thus giving the edges a finished look.

Hi Gary- another beautiful piece! You make it look so simple. Did I miss where you punched holes in the gussets? How did you calculate the width of the gusset? Finally Does anyone know where I can buy the hole punching chisels like these? All I have are 1/8" ones from Tandy and they are way too big. Great video! TYVM-J
@garyipip

+John Boyd Thank you!!! I didn't punch holes in the gussets!!! The gusset is 3 inches wide, a wider gusset makes the front flap shorter, so it doesn't really matter!!! happy stitching!!!
@namvetsgt71ify
@namvetsgt71ify 9 жыл бұрын
+garyipip Gary- Sorr, but I meant the holes in the gussets for sewing it in place. BTW -What size of chisels do you use for your hand sewing on small leather projects? I have seen some on EBay that are. 3, .4, .5 mm. Thanks again, John
@CasaErwin
@CasaErwin 9 жыл бұрын
+John Boyd Yeah, Tandy is not a good place to buy these types of chisels. They are commonly called "pricking irons" and one good place I've found to buy them online is from Goods Japan. Several places sell them, but Goods Japan offers free shipping worldwide. I was a little hesitant at first, but I have found their tools to be of very good quality.

+Dale Erwin Thank you. Will have a look there. I started leather work 12 years ago, when I spent 3 months in a VA hospital. I am happy to find other sources for tools, materials and lots of advice!
@CasaErwin
@CasaErwin 9 жыл бұрын
John Boyd BTW, you notice that Gary said he did not punch holes in the gussets. These pricking irons are normally only used to mark the location of the stitching holes and do not go all the way through. The holes are then made with a diamond-shaped stitching awl. However, I think I would be tempted to mark the gussets very lightly with the pricking iron just to know how many holes to punch into the main body piece. After punching the location of the stitching holes in the main body piece, the gusset is then cemented to the main piece and the holes are punched all the way through the two pieces with the awl. At least that's the way I do it.
