You’re on the Dashing Axe channel and this time we aimed at the classics and decided to make a table based on the movie "The Matrix". A bunch of difficulties and mistakes, 50 meters of addressable LED strip, more than 7000 smart symbols and, as a result, the table that I’ve never seen before. Enjoy watching.

@@srtghfnbfg LOL you have no idea what you are talking about. To power that many LED’s takes A LOT more power than a tv. Watch a tv disassembly video on youtube. LCD screens have only a few LED’s for a backlight. The screen only filters light; it doesn’t produce it. They needed TWO industrial power supplies to power this build.

@conorstewart2214
@conorstewart2214 Жыл бұрын
@@srtghfnbfg do you realise how much power LED strips use? It is generally 20 mA per led and there are 3 (sometimes 4) in each RGB LED, that is only for standard ones not extra bright or high power ones. That means if they just use the green LED that is 20 mA at 5 V which equals 0.1 W. Let’s assume a TV uses 70 W, which was the higher end of what I found online, that means 700 LEDs would use the same amount of power just showing green. I didn’t check how many LEDs he had in the table but that is probably at least 700, even a 50 x 50 square of LEDs is 2500 LEDs. Add on top of that, a lot of the energy of the LEDs will be wasted due to how he mounted them, they shine directly at the next strip which is black but it is partially reflective and as much light will be lost out of the bottom as the top so it really isn’t a very efficient design, less than half the output of the LEDs makes it out the top of the table. Just look at the power supplies he is using, they will be relatively high power and a single one of them would use more power than a TV and you know he uses more than that since he needs two power supplies. The design could be made more efficient by using reflective tape of something to direct all the light out the table or it could be better designed to mount the LEDs flat against the table, so all their light comes out the table, then if you don’t need the full brightness you can turn it down to save power. LEDs are pretty efficient and low power but not that efficient and if you get loads of them together they will use a lot of power.

I would have opted for a project LCD screen or an OLED driven by a RPi

There is a skill set so far beyond just one area, it is mind boggling a person (or two) can do all this by themselves! And the machines available to you make this a very modern apprenticeship with again new skills required to build future projects. Amazing stuff. Read in one of the comments a wish for commentary, which I wholeheartedly agree with. Either narration afterwards or during the design and build process, to follow you along in challenges and decisions, how you prepare such an elaborate project with basically multi layered solutions and multi facetted challenges in both construction and development, would be great for many of us to learn how you went about designing this, at least! DIY doesn't need to be using cheap or antiquated tools but once your shop goes over a certain level of resources the DIY label becomes an ill fit. Calling this DIY is not entirely wrong but in a rather literal sense dilutes the label's meaning and not in an useful way. That said there are maker spaces in the US and other countries if you are fortunate enough to have access to one I could understand your perspective on downplaying the level of resources expertise needed for a project like this one.

That's why it's better to make tables out of TV's like many people do, it's way cheaper and you can make them show anything!

It seems like you could have achieved the same sort of backlighting effect with much less effort if you just paste a tv screen to the back instead of thousands of leds.

While interesting, it would have been about 100x easier to just use a monitor screen built into a table frame with a tempered glass cover. Not to take away from this build, absolutely amazing table here. Just thinking out loud!

Great work. I see a lot of people writing that just use an LCD or led display .. i have a take on this i kind agree on the effort seems very work intense..also the current of all the strips...furthermore i kind of agree that the theme gets old quick... But here is where i kind of disagree. So if i was to have such a piece at home, friends will say ohh wow you got a television in the table...where this seems more finished and unique. So here is the paradoks. Matrix is green bars is actually on a screen... So great job great video. I would love to have some comments along the way... And the workmanship is topnotch, and sometimes the gold in the work and not the result.
