Blue and Yellow make green.... I misspoke... but for some reason when blending Spectra Flame paints, Green and yellow give a teal blue. I should have explained myself there...

Mwoah. If the green paint is made from mixing blue and yellow....adding a yellow later could result in a blue-ish shine. And yes, that maybe hard to see on video, but IRL your eyes can play that trick on you....

Yes, pigments can combine in ways that do not appear in the elementary how to books and videos! The reason is that paints you buy commercially are not typically based on a single monochromatic pigment. Instead, most paints are a mixture of pigments and thus non-canonical mixing effects occur when you put them together. The one thing that surprises me is that manufacturers usually push the trouble into the so-called "non spectral hues" i.e. blue/red mixes (so you get mud instead of purple). The yellow/green/blue set usually behaves as would be expected. I suspect that the additional conditions set on a transparent spectra flame job made it impossible for them to _also_ obey the green+yellow=yellowish green rule.

Glad you started with yellow. A graphic designer once told me, at least in printing always start with yellow/ lightest tone. Darker tones go last. When you do the darker as the base it takes a lot of layers of the lighter tones to cover over the darker parts. I used to work in commercial embroidery. When I had blends of colors to design, before I knew this, If I had yellow on top of red, red bits would always show through in the wrong sections. It really made designing the sewing files easier to get the effect right. Sometimes I miss doing the embroidery cad work. On a good day, it was being paid to color. On a tedious day, it was hand drawing lots of letters. Graphics were usually more fun. It’s been almost 20 years since I worked in that industry.

Nitpick but you said yellow and green make blue instead of blue and yellow make green ;) As for the sandblasting method, it looks pretty close to the original look you are going for. As someone mentioned blow, you can try soda blasting, it's a much finer medium and will probably yield an even closer match with less detail loss and noticeable pitting.

I have a few that I would like to restore(1968 custom mustangs...3 of them), but I don't want to take away any monetary value to them. Thirty years ago I purchased these at a flea market for $5 apiece, wonder what they're worth today.

Suggestion, and this is based on personal taste: Consider getting a soft box / diffuser for your LED light, this will conceal the grid of individual LED elements visible in the reflection on the paint. You can even just tape a piece of printer paper such that it bows out over the front of the light. I realize that you might find the visible LED grid useful for checking the paint finish, but I thought I'd suggest it because you're a technical person, and at the end of the day HW customization is all about the looks!

Fantastic video. I think the car turned out great. I am sure in person you are right that the mirror polish pops more but the way you film the car the more matte surface really looks nice. I don’t know if this is true or not but I have a oval window bug and the man I bought it from said that he let Mattel barrow it a long time ago to take measurements off of it for the hotwheel version of it.

I don't know where you're getting supplies from through the mail, but I've been waiting on a package coming from Hong Kong which surprisingly has made it to the states in only a couple days, but I'm not seeing anything in regards to it clearing customs yet. Hoping it gets here next month as I'm currently building a display for an upcoming show and its a big part of what my setup is about. Then again, with things being as they are right now I'm a little concerned the show may end up getting canceled anyway.

Tip for 4-15-2020 When re-gluing CA glue on straight axle cars. Put a gate "glob" of paraffin wax in all 4 corners of base. Set axle on base into wax then use thumb to heal the slot around wax . Wax will hold axle in place "center and squared" Glue as usual. CA glue will not get into tire hubs. You could use plumbers putty if that's all you have... But most people have a candle around the house somewhere.. If not steal one from your grandsons birthday cake... LOL... Most paraffin wax will soften enough with body heat. From Pintony
