That is not a bull gouge, that is a spindle roughing gouge DON'T USE IT TO TURN A BOWL. The change in going from cutting face grain to end crane vibrates the tang in the gouge which weakens it and will cause it to break, so it is very dangerous only use that when doing spindle turning

I completely agree with this. A bowl gouge should be made from round stock HSS, and should be the same diameter from tip (excluding the sharpened part) all the way in to the handle. This is the safest way to make one. In no way are we downplaying your ability to make your own tools. We just want to make sure you are safe.

I legit started this video just to make sure this was said. Turning end grain with a spindle gouge is very dangerous and can cause your tool to break and come flying back at yourself.

Just as Owen Wallace said that is NOT a bowl gouge. You have made a Spindle Roughing Gouge. It is meant only to be used with spindle work. Using that for a bowl gouge is extremely dangerous. It does not have enough strength and could snap. Bad things could happen.
