Making a sprocket for bicycle chain the way Clickspring wouldn't

EDIT: 2 years later I have completed the project I needed to make sprockets for. • Sprocket and chain tim...
I had a need for 8 tooth sprockets and worked out a design after examining a few different sized sprockets salvaged from bicycles. I made one from Aluminium off camera and then I stepped up to 3mm thick steel.
This isn't for a bicycle, I don't expect it to work on one and you shouldn't either :)
Originally I thought I would have to get something like this CNC cut, but I got pretty good results with basic tools. You could probably lay out the design on
the steel with dividers but I find using printouts easier.
more details on the project at / spe_in_stag_ram
Love your work Chris!

Awesome man, it's pretty nifty you made a functional sprocket with a drill and a belt sander. Sent it to my mate who's making a motorised sliding fence gate for his ranch. I gave him a 5mm thick piece of spring steel, and your sprocket sketch, so if it survives pulling a 180kg sliding gate then i'd say it's more than fine for ebikes and stuff.

Cheers, I wouldn't use it on anything high speed but it should probably do OK on a gate. Thanks for watching!

@lapislignum

Thanks! Think of this more a an easy way to make a sprocket than the right way, the tooth shape should be an involute, I made it straight to make it easier to grind with a simple jig, my application is very low RPM, I'd want to use CNC on something fast, or just use one from a bike.

On subsequent sprockets I used a drill guide instead of centre punching which gave much better results, instagram.com/p/B8sxbb4naD5/ adding circles made it even easier to line up the paper template and the steel it was glued to with the drill guide.

What's your application? What speed and torque do you need? Cordless drill could work if you don't need it to be compact, otherwise I imagine it won't be cheap. Oh and excellent workmanship is generous but thanks, my later sprockets are much better, have made about 10 now.

@Abin jose There could be, I haven't seen one. I just did what looked right in CAD based on the dimensions of the chain and bike sprockets I had lying around, and would be easy to make.
