Making a squishy rubber bouncy ball from scratch

For this one, I'm going to try to synthesize a bouncy ball. Basically I'm making something called Thiokol rubber, and hopefully as a ball, it'll be bouncy.

hijacking your post because shitty orwellian youtube deletes every other top level comment I make now apparently: Nige have you ever been approached by instrument manufacturers that make NMR, HPLC, or FTIR instruments or have you approached them to maybe get some of these things for the channel for free? If not, you should. Many of these instruments have been so miniaturized and pared down for cost that they now sit on a benchtop and take up no more area than a laptop. Like Digikey giving away their oscilloscopes to electronics channels as a form of advertising I'm sure you could find at least a couple companies willing to do this for chemistry instrumentation. A simple 80MHz NMR or ATR FTIR machine would be a wonderful asset to the channel and the younger viewers learning about chemistry...

That raises a question in my mind watching you make that solution of polysulphides. I take some drain cleaner crystals and add some sulfur to it, then slowly heat it up in a big metal pipe cap until it all melts and reacts. Then while it's liquid, pour it out into an aluminum dish and let it cool and solidify. It's called the liver of sulfur. You put a little piece of it in some water to get a yellow solution which we can use to patina copper or bronze. Problem is, once you make it, it doesn't tend to last very long before turning white and going bad. I'm guessing that liquid solution that you made wouldn't last just sitting in a jar for a couple of months either? I'm not a chemist so I don't really know why the liver of sulfur solution breaks down over time. My guess would be the complex with sulfur breaks down and it falls out of solution.
@B-System
@B-System 2 жыл бұрын
The polysulfides aren't very stable in general, and in particular they break down in low pH; exposure to CO2 in the air will tend to slowly lower the pH over time, and the polysulfides break down into just sulfur and fall out of solution, just as you suspect.

"really slow" he says but it takes only 30 minutes. chemistry in college had me sitting there for 4 hours. sometimes weeks for a polymer to set up. sometimes these things take a very long time to react! days! im sure he's spent so much time just friggin waiting for shit to work lol but having to keep an eye on in incase it goes badly
