For flaring use various diameter ball bearings and the arbor press. You could also use some removable shims while flaring to ensure there is enough movement.

Groovy knife! Now that y'all are starting to get acquainted with serrated knives, I'd like to see you do comparisons of how easy it is to make a round serrated edge versus a trapezoidal or "Double-D" serrated edge like Cutco knives and your own experiences on cutting differences between them.

I know trapezoidal/triangular serrations are easy enough with a file or a cutting disc, not sure how you get the double serrations like on the saw blade in my victorinox, I think that's also just using the right cutter?

Hi Alec When sharpening cerated knifes, i have used a brass wire brush to get rid of the burr. Striking from the spine towards the edge, alternating both sides of the blade. This flexes and removes the burr without damaging the surface, because the brass is softer than the blade steel.

Maintaining your nails is a huge part of climbing. I think a pair of Damascus nail clippers would be challenging and amazing!

One tip I've heard when you overpeen the pivot is half open the knife, rest the blade tip on something and gently tap the joint, kind of along the axis of the pivot, so you are putting sideways pressure on the blade and just levering it open a teeny bit. Of course, the whole thing could fall into pieces. But it has worked for me so far.

I GOT IT - This is the most awesome version of "How It's Made" - I was like.... damn, this episode has great music.... and man, he's doing some cool precise work, showing us how things... are... MADE! Tell you what tho, the relationship with You and Jamie gives this the feel of a sort of 'top gear' thing (I assume you know, clarkson, etc). So this channel is like How It's Made mixed with Top Gear (US version Grand Tour). I can't wait to share this with all the people I know.

*Important* Just a heads up, you'll need to be careful that the thumb pin doesn't catch on something and open the knife without you noticing. I've seen it several times over the years where someone's knife is hanging open without them realising it. It does look amazing, but just keep an eye on it 😊👍👍👍

ya, sometimes when machining certain composite materials or plastics, some WEIRD things happen at the cutting end. Heat causes part to expand much more than steel, so cutting tolerances are usually a little strange. Usually I end up cutting often, cooling often, just to make sure I have the right tolerance.

You have grown so much since those early days of blacksmithing. Now you are surrounded by power hammers, and forges, and presses, and lathes, I present you with a challenge. I wish that you could do a video that harkens back to the beginning of your smithing career. Specifically on how to make a coal-fired forge with a proper clinker breaker and tuyére. The challenge is to make it able to be disassembled and stored with minimal space. And with the spirit and wallet of a young smith in mind, everything needs to be made from scrap materials when possible from around the shop.

Awesome work as always Alec! quick tip for you when it comes to that rivet flaring off centre, if you do something like this again then I suggest turning a short mandrel onto the end of the flaring tool that is a loose fit on the centre bore, that will help centre the tool on the rivet. I never thought I could give you advice but, I sharpen knives for a living and the easiest way to remove a bur from serrations is a high-speed buffer at an angle of about 30 degrees. Green compound or just a stiff wheel will knock that burr off and also completely sharpen them, razor sharp. Do it in increments to avoid heat. I always start with the teeth first and then do the flat side until all the burr is gone. Give it a shot! Warning, use a stiff grip and don't hit the spine or it may ricochet!

A staking tool is what you needed to make. Essentially an over-built C clamp that has a pointed die on each side of the jaws, and uses an acme screw to flare the tube ends outward. The benefits of such a tool are consistent flare, and finer adjustments.....just a thought in case you give this a shot again

@alecSteel when it comes to flairing I as a tradesman plumber have a ratcheting rigid pipe flairing tooland it's a great investment. When I do scales I'll use brass pipe or copper pipe and assemble the scales with a counter sink on each side. I flair one side of pipe push it through than I either use the hand punch flairing tool with a hammer on the other side and i have never lost any scales. Look into it may come in handy
