I was so hoping you would put in a non-elasticated waistband and you did! Yay! I think the weight of the skirt would have been too much for the elastic to handle, both visually and in practicality. The drape of the skirt came out beautifully! These days, I'm making scalloped curtains in a small peachy pink floral cotton for my home office.

Carly, my dad has a fabric stall at a market (I know, lucky me, I’ve never had to pay for fabric in my life) and he’s taught me the easiest way to tell if your fabric is cotton or polyester: pull one threat out from a frayed edge. Then pull it apart to try and break it. If it breaks easily, it’s cotton, if it’s hard to break (hard as in, for example, when you try and break sewing thread), then it’s polyester. Natural fibres are easy to break. Which is why sewing thread is usually polyester.

Great tip - thanks :)

cotton polly fabrics can be hard for that with some threads are cotton som poly

I can confirm... my crochet cotton breaks far easier as tick as it is than my thread for the machine.

Beautiful skirt! I love watching your videos since discovering them. You are so creative and positive! Currently I’m in the middle of crocheting a cardigan, hand sewing/quilting a fanny pack, fabric folding Christmas baubles and hacking the McCall 7969 into a top. Just bought fabric for a baby quilt for a friend. Must try harder not to have lots of projects on the go.

Just an idea for gathering: I found the two-thread method really slow, so for a few years now, every time I need to gather something (skirts, dresses, even gathers on sleeves), I use the shirring method. It's much better because the fabric is already gathered right when you take it out of the machine, and the elastic thread allows you to adjust the gathers to fit the size you want. For example, when gathering a skirt, I secure it in 4 points and then pull the elastic thread to fit the rest. Love your channel!

Where in the world did you buy fabric for $1 a meter? I live in china and even fabric directly from the factory is about twice as expensive as that. Granted I only buy good quality cotton.

This turned out so well! And I am very happy you did the zipper waistband, it was definitely the right call. My only tip for the future is that I always like to hang my circle skirts for as long as possible after cutting them before finishing or hemming them in case they stretch on the bias making them wonky. I have let skirts hang for up to two weeks before coming back to them (which I get is not very realistic for making content).

I just finished up making replacements for my polyester sweatpants, and when I went to wash them, one of them leaked dye onto the rest of them! Including the drawstrings, so I had to tediously remove as much leaked dye as I could, AND I had to just straight up dye the drawstrings. They're black now. Every pair gets black drawstring now. Ah well

I absolutely love this skirt. Do you think a cotton lawn or linen would have the right weight to keep the shape/drape without straining the waistband as much? Can't sew right now because I broke my toe and can't operate the pedal, but maybe when it's healed I should try this?!?!?!

This skirt is such a dream! I’m surprised you didn’t add some cheeky pockets 😊 Also next time you understitch you should try sewing from the right side of the fabric and sew a couple millimeters next to the seam line to give a clean finish on the outside.

I’m making 120 crocheted froggies for Christmas shoeboxes for children in third world countries. They represent F. R. O. G. fully rely on God. Most children never receive a single toy in their lives and my church is a small part of the Christmas shoeboxes program. I’ve finished 27 froggies thus far. I try to crochet at least one a day and hope to finish by Thanksgiving here in Texas. I’ve got several other projects in the works. Up cycling a dress that is too narrow I got from thrifting. Adding side panels so it will fit.

I just finished woking on PJ pants for hubby and me with some of the mass amounts of thrifted fabric I have! I made my own pattern starting from an old kiwk sew pattern, also thrifted, and completely changed the shape to match hubby fave pair and added cuffs and changed the pockets. So I guess they're not really anything like the original pattern anymore lol
