Good tips. For those sticklers opting for the small zip tie, if they’re trimmed right at the knob of zip tie with nail clippers, you won’t be stabbed by a sharpe edge of one that’s simply been trimmed. But the ‘twisting’ suggestion appears to be the answer as well. But even better, the wire tie suggestion seems to make a whole lot more sense. And of course, the wire’s reusable.

Good info. I use a # 11 o-ring to stop accidental discharge of fuel. Works so much better than a zip tie or bread tie. Easy to put on and remove too!

This was a great video great information that that tip about using a to keep the button from depressing was I'd like to add one thing that I always do with any lighter when I'm going out in the field I always take one or two guitar picks and put them underneath the layer of duct tape a guitar pick is made of highly flammable material and will burn for at least 30 to 60 seconds and if you have that it just makes it easier to start a fire

Nice... I will just tape the line with the tape I will anyways wrap around 😉 saves me the epoxy and it's a little bit "Ultra Light" 👍🏻

Personally use P.K.W.L the lighter has duct tape wrapped around it, some paracord at the bottom of it and a wrap tie (things in the kitchen used to seal sandwhich bags and sometimes certain bread) this is in the event I'm ever lost in the middle of nowhere
@YouTuber-mc2el4 ай бұрын
One strand of inner paracord seems a bit too weak. Last thing you want is for the lanyard to break and then you're screwed. What about some microcord?

You can also use white, light grey or orange duct tape to provide a contrast to the background, while having more duct tape than usual. Also a long enough wire tie could also be used to hold the lever down so that one do not need to hold it down with their finger
@negolfman3 жыл бұрын
You might want to add the bic lighter a foot of non-gutted paracord vertically connected to a roll of chapstick with two feet of hi-visibility gaffers or gorilla tape wrapped several times around each leaving a little room above the chapstick adjusting wheel to prevent losing either. The sharp edge of a small zip tie around the valve can be filed to prevent cuts. Then you can take petroleum jelly to a a cotton ball and store it in the cap of the chapstick. Plus if left on the adhesive sticker is also flammable, once you have a empty lighter, if the spark wheel is removed slowly the springs underneath it and the valve button there are springs that can be made into a snare & fishing hooks, with some bending and sharpening and the childproof metal safety device can be removed with leatherman pliers can also be made into a improvised fishing hook and sharpened.

These are great ideas. But can you be specific on why they are not 100% reliable? BIC is the best/safest lighter brand on the planet. They literally test every single lighter they sell and they sell billions. They also use isobutane instead of butane so it can be used above 10k feet, use a stronger plastic than others, and exceed all safety requirements. Thanks.

Pick one up and press down on the gas valve. Now see what I mean? If it's packed in a bag, there's nothing to prevent all the gas from being let out if somehow the valve is depressed. So it won't light when you need it. It's not unreliable by design, it becomes unreliable by use. I remove the safety so it can be used with gloved hands.
@anthonysmith40723 жыл бұрын
@@BackPackHack that makes sense, I totally agree. I was looking at the anatomy of the Bic and noticed that fork works like a teeter totter. So keeping it from going up would be just as effective as keeping it from going down. I was originally thinking about drilling a hole through the red part of the fork that you push down and installing a multi use pin of some kind that could be easily removed. Then I was thinking about cutting a notch under the same part and then putting something useful(maybe some hard tinder) to fill the notch and securing it with a bicycle tire tube which can also be used as a fire starter, and if you were to use a V type notch along with the elastic tube than it wouldn’t depress under normal pocket use but in an emergency(one handed) if you pressed hard enough it would kick out the “plug” and still let you light it while still capturing the plug. But then I thought that maybe adding a similar device to the front to keep the fork from moving up would be better. I have not seen anyone use any of these methods before

You did that in the hardest way possible, there is a much easier way that is just as effective. All you need to do everything you just did is bankline and gorilla tape.
@BackPackHack2 жыл бұрын
Um... that IS gorilla tape. And a single internal thread out of some 550 paracord is simply a lighter version of bankline.
@lcm75412 жыл бұрын
@@BackPackHack I think he is saying to tape the cord directly to the lighter. One issue I had with paracord strands is the durability and vulnerability with to Velcro. Inner strands of bankline are still pretty thin 👍🏻
