You can remove a tick simply by grabbing the sack gently (without breaking) and rotate it counter clock wise until it falls out. This will save you a lot of time.

I have a couple friends that got lyme disease. Scary what it does to your body when it's not caught and treated quickly. Seems to be becoming a much more common disease in recent years, along with a larger tick population in general. Hate those things. Good trick to have on hand to remove them.

Another tip: NEVER use heated tweezers (or heat in general) to remove them. It causes ticks to release more of the fluids that transmit disease.

The currently accepted opinion from experts is that you should do NOTHING to distress the embedded tick. That rules out burning with matches and cigarettes; coating with Vaseline, alcohol, or oil, etc., etc.

@73Corbin damn thats real bad. I had an uncle that used to be a hunter, so naturally he spent lots of time in forests. I dont know for sure if he had lyme, but its almost certain he did, as he had many symptomes and eventually, after years of suffering, died to Parkinson's desease (which can be caused by lyme)

Thank you for making this, it is very important to carefully check yourself for ticks at the end of everyday you spend in the woods. I am a forester and I can no longer eat red meat or pork due to a condition known as "alpha-gal syndrome" which is a meat allergy that you can get from lone-star ticks. But there are many other much worse diseases carried by ticks. The treatments are not pleasant and the untreated diseases can be debilitating. It is very important to take ticks seriously.

When I lived in the Australian bush, ticks were a common problem. We only ever used an anticlockwise twist while pulling with fingertips, which never failed for me but yes it is important to ensure a method that works for inexperienced people.

I believe this is my first exposure to your channel. I found your extraction method ingenious. But what really captured my interest was your woodcraft/bushcraft that drew my attention when I heard you say ". . . making a door for my cabin." Over the next few minutes you had me and I am now subscribed. You remind me of the fellow, who has passed, who spent maybe 20-25 years off grid in Alaska, and by hand crafted everything which he needed to live, not survive, a full life. Thank you Max. That was a great demonstration of the principles of extracting embedded objects. I spent a lot of time in remote wilderness areas in my youth. Ticks like to hang out on tree bark to climb on you when leaning against the tree. Also in tall grass when you walk through. Check ankles, waistband, collar and hair frequently, as these areas have blood flow close to the skin and are often where a tick will be found. Ticks inject a numbing agent when biting, so it can be hard to feel them. Hopefully this world craziness will end soon....You are in our thoughts : )

i get a lot of tics where i live, very similar looking, i use tweezers heated up to kill the tic as i pull it out but your method looks very good as well, when i pull the tic out i just apply even pressure until it falls out, if you yank it to hard it will pull the head off every time

I have been told not to use heat on a tick before extraction because this can cause the tick to regurgitate. This obviously increases your risk of exposure to pathogens that the tick carries. Someone out there has probably actually done studies on the topic, but that's just something I was told once.

I'm from the Ozarks where multiple tick bites are just a part of life. I was always taught to pinch a tick firmly and pull with a steady pressure, taking care not to pull the ticks head off. The goal is to convince the tick to release on it's own. Then you can kill it. When we were kids some peoples parents would burn ticks off with a lit cigarette or coat a tick in clear nail polish, but neither of those methods are recommended because they cause an embedded tick to vomit into your body. That's bad news if the tick is carrying any diseases.

Having removed numerous ticks during my stint in the Australian Army...I find this technique quite interesting and helpful. However, if simple tweezers are all you have, just make sure to twist the tick one way, or the other during the pulling motion. Check for three prongs on it's head all good. Also another technique, is to cover the tick completely in Petroleum jelly and wait for it to reverse it's self out because of lack of air...they do the job for you.

earlier it was recommended to put food grade oil on them to make them let go... but then they realised that the tick in the process also released the fluids that transmits disease...careful with the petroleum technique.

@@markust5601 Yes that's true...the wound will often re-infect every 12mths for a couple of years. I had one that did that 3 years in a row...there's a very good chance the tick will release it's fluids even when being removed by tweezers or a device as shown in the video. They are just nasty little bastards. Alcohol wipe to stun them and then pull and twist is what I do. The alcohol mitigates the release of toxins.

That works. Unconveniently though, the tick releases a good bit of (possibly infectious) saliva into the wound before letting go. So it would be better to pull it out with a proper tool.

@@nicolecrystal6765 There is no advantage if it comes out itself when you have a good extraction tool. Also applying some substance to the tick while it is in the skin can increase the ammount of infectious particles it releases. It is best to remove it as quickly as possible without any soaking.

I live on the East Coast of Australia, the Tick capital of Oz. I've been real sick from paralysis ticks, one had me off my head for almost 2 weeks 🤪 I'll definitely give this a go and have one prepared in my wallet. I've got scars from cattle ticks that are over 10 years old, and most probably have Lyme Disease. 🍺

In America our ticks can give you a disease that makes you highly allergic to red meat. A family friend who raises cattle contracted it a few years ago and still can't eat meat. Says eating red meat makes him so sick he has to spwnd a night in the hospital

Ringo, sounds like Lyme disease. A couple I know lived in the hills and his wife caught it from ticks, he also worked with cattle and had to wash down before he could hug his wife or she’d get an allergic reaction. Sold up and moved to concrete where it was safer for her.

SymonSR20, we’ve got them all year round. The worst enablers of ticks are bloody bandicoots as they attract the paralysis ticks and travel quite a distance eating at night. Lemon cut in half and rubbed on your skin keeps them at bay 👍🏽

Japanese knotweed tincture (Reynoutria japonica) is a good natural supplement to take in case you are worried about Lyme disease. (Or immediate initial dose of doxycycline from a doctor). We have always had some level of ticks where I live but never gave them a second thought. Lucky I guess because I have never had effects from them. Hearing the potential sickness that can come from these things the last few years is pretty concerning. I certainly have been more cautious the last few years. Thank yoh for this. Ticks seem to absolutely love me and the feeling is definitely not mutual. Lyme disease and Babisiosis (parasite that destroys red blood cells) have put a real beating on my body, as well as my dog, and any info to protect us is welcome. I didn't take the dangers of tics seriously and have paid the price for my ignorance. Lyme disease was created on Plum Island Connecticut in a "germ warfare" lab, and the first case found nearby in Lyme.

If you dont have an extractor for ticks, you can also use rubbing alcohol. If the tick did bite you, the key sign of lymes disease is a reddish ring around where it bit you, seek medical attention if that forms. You can buy boot bands and blouse your pants around your boots instead of tucking them into your boots (this is just as effective but more comfortable). Also, ticks sit in brush or on trees and tend to "drop" on you , they sense heat of passing animals, theyre pretty good at it, ive actually had a few of them drop on my shoulder and back. If you wear lighter colored clothing (if not hunting) it also makes it easier to spot them and lighter colors also deter mosquitos. =) love the videos Max!

A few decades ago, I discovered a nifty method to, easily, remove embedded ticks. Just ooze enough S/A glue to engulf the full body. This causes immediate death, since the glue covers all of the breathing apparatuses, resulting in asphyxiation. Since ticks are proteinaceous, like fingers, all of the body parts are glued together. Then, the whole tick is, readily, removed by the flick of a finger, or by scraping it off with a knife edge. Since this process happens so quickly, the glue does not have enough time to stick the tick to the skin. (The credit card demo was pure genius. Especially liked the scaled-up egg. 😎)
