Inspired by research into the art of instrument making, as well as collaborative sound making workshops, this video documents the process of making an wooden Tongue Drum. Using Mahogany wood, this documentary explores the act of building with the process becoming a form of artwork in itself.

This is the first time I've heard a mahogany tongue drum. This is your first drum? I'm very impressed with the sound and craftmanship - job well done.

Thank you, yes this is the first drum I have made. It was a lot of research and trial and error to create it but the mahogany does have a nice tone to it.

@@jacobcarter_art I just realized that WoodPack uses Borneo Mahagony in their SUNRISE model, which I had heard before and absolutely love. You can find videos on KZbin. I encourage you to explore this further. And thank you for not using paduak for the top. I've heard the sound of paduak thousands of time and it's nice to hear something different.

Nice job. Thanks for posting it. I'm planning to make one for my daughter's birthday in August. I just finished a Kalimba for her husband whose birthday is in July. I've been doing tons of research on the tongue drum and am anxious to start work on it. I'm going with either mahogany or q'sawn white oak for the box and purpleheart for the top. I'm considering ebonizing whatever species I use for the box. I ebonized the bridge of the kalimba and it looks great. When I learned about iron acetate I knew I'd have to try it so after letting the steel wool and nails steep for a week, I filtered it thru a coffee filter and tried it on a scrap of walnut and I was floored by how well it worked. Looking at it side by side with a scrap of actual ebony, you can't tell the difference. I realize it'll be a little different with a much larger sample but if the way the kalimba bridge turned out is any indicatyion I believe the results will be stunning.
