This video will take you step by step on how to make a topwater bass popper. From turning the plug on a wood lathe,cutting the mouth,sealing the wood,painting the lure with an airbrush, applying an epoxy finish, tying feathers on rear hook, attaching the hooks and then i will catch catching a couple of fish on it. Hope you enjoy video. Please comment, like, share and subscribe.
Thanks Capt. Justin

Excellent job on the lure. I have a ton of wood table/chair legs that I can't do anything with so I've decided that I'd make fishing lures with them after cutting them to the right length. So far that I've seen,you've got the best tutorial . Great job!

thank u for answering my question i used to buy the foam poppers from netcraft and by the way they very good people i get all my materails from them but i switched to wood and making them small as a bass popper should be i just love working with wood and they seem to cast fair using 8 weight but belive do better with 9 weight line and using basswood balsa just tires to easy thank u again

I already had all the tools, so the hooks are the most expensive part. I don't think it cost more than a dollar or two to make. What it does take is time! nice baits, just a little tip when painting the eyes on the wood baits try using a small nail ( like a finish nail) with just a little paint on the end of the head and just dab it on the bait. also try experiment with different size nail heads. (practice on a piece of scrap wood to get the feel for it) it does work!

What brand/type of wood lathe are you using? I'm looking into getting the same setup and doing my own lures. What tool with the ball tip is that?
@fishunter3
@fishunter3 7 жыл бұрын
The lathe is an old Sears brand that I got off of Craigs list. The rotory flex shaft tool is a Weecheer with a cutzall ball for a bit to cut the mouth of the popper. Good luck and good fishing!
@jarheadfishing9181
@jarheadfishing9181 7 жыл бұрын
With the cutzall and spray paint, does that work off a compressor? Last question, sorry. I'm new with tools (this would be my first "tools" sadly)
@fishunter3
@fishunter3 7 жыл бұрын
The airbrush can run off a compressor. I have mine set up on a co2 tank, I like the lack of noise without the compressor. The Weecheer is a motor with a flex shaft and hand piece. I don't mine answering questions so don't worry about it. Good luck!

The Fishunter Are poppers the only lures you make? I've been wanting to make my own fishing lures so I was thinking when it starts to get cold I was going to get a few tools for making my own lures, like a lathe, airbrush, possible a dremel, and some simple tools. I'm 16 so I think this would be a great hobby to try out and especially great for the winter months where I don't have any hobbies. Do you think it's worth the investment? A simple craft lathe costs like $125 and airbrush $40, so it's a bit of an investment I suppose for myself.

Hi Anthony, I make some other plugs, lead head jigs and all kinds of flies. Fly tying was how I got my start in lure making. You can get a kit with a vise and basic tools for short money and start tying flies and catching fish right away. You will learn a lot about how fish feed and what works to catch them. The lathe and other tools can be very expensive. I got mine from someone on Craigslist. You can also get unfinished lure bodies from Jann's Netcraft and finish them how you like. Just another way to get started for less money. Good luck and good fishing!

I used KVD elite, treble 2x, short 1x, strong size 6. They are expensive but they are sticky sharp, I hardly never miss a strike. The screw eye were brass 062 DI in 5/8 and 3/4 and the rings are Owner Hyper split ring size 2 35 lb. Hope that helps. You can make the same plug in different sizes and adjust the hardware to match. Good luck!

Thanks Bruen, I believe that was a 3/4 inch wrench on that one. The flex shaft is a Wecheer that accepts a 1/4 inch shaft. The bit is a cutzall ball 1/2 inch. Any ball shaped bit will work just depends on how big you want the mouth to be. Hope it helps. Good luck and good fishing!

+Jimmy Anderson I use an Iwata HP-A but I do a lot of other painting also. You could use a cheaper Badger airbrush that you could find at your local arts and craft store. Check online to see what you can find. Good luck and Good fishing!

+Jimmy Anderson It's a kutzall ball, i'm not sure the size. the popper is 3/4 of a inch at its widest so it,s a little smaller than that.

That particular lure is made for fresh water. I do make saltwater pencil poppers and I use a through wire to hang the hooks. Thanks for watching. Good luck and good fishing!
