Try strip setting instead of trout setting. This means when you get a strike, set the hook by pulling the line with your stripping hand, instead of immediately lifting the rod tip. Once you feel the solid weight of the fish, then you can lift the rod tip and fight like mormal. This will be more likely to create a solid connection between you and the fish, but more importantly, if the fish missed the fly on it's strike, now it just looks like the fly made another pop rather than it looking like the fly literally flew away. Tight lines!

Yea the strip strike is what I use for all my fly fishing when I first started I did what he did I didn’t get a single fish lol
@jameslaw3740 Жыл бұрын
Trout setting??? Strip setting is how you trout fish, rod yanking is how you bass\pike with a spinning reel. Shorter stripping would help also to have a better chance of setting the hook and fish on....🐋
@willdenoble1898 Жыл бұрын
@@jameslaw3740 you can rod tank for trout too, just not nearly as extreme as he did and your rod tank goes towards the fish’s tail to set hook in said fish’s jaw (think pulling the fish by its tail). Usually the yank set is about 1-2ft not 6ft like him.

THIS! I just caught several small bluegill, sunfish, and smallies in a low river a few weeks ago that was crowded with other anglers throwing crankbaits. I was landing 3-4 fish between each of their combined landings. Funny because they were riding me for bringing a fly rod to that spot.

Seems like the most versatile bass rod for flies is the 10' 8wt. Especially when reaching out far.
@jackmcmanus12382 жыл бұрын
I'd reccomend a 9' 7wt. An 8 wt would be a bit stiff and not as much fun for fighting fish, and a 10 foot is slightly more difficult to land fish on, plus it is significantly more difficult for casting in tight spots (close to trees etc.)
@gregkosinski2303 Жыл бұрын
@@jackmcmanus12388wt might be better for people who only use a few rods though. I have a 3, 5, and 8wt. 3wt for small stream and panfishing 5wt for river trout, but a very good do most things freshwater 8wt for bass, pike, carp, salmon/steelhead, and maybe even some saltwater. I think that’s the trio that probably makes the most sense for most people.

New to fly fishing trying to watch as many videos as I can, this one was awesome!!! I notice that almost all the Bass videos are using those poppers flies, is that basically all you need for bass? Also what size tippet and leader were you using? Any information would be appreciated
@loganwright34235 жыл бұрын
Tippet and leader are usually dependent on the size of the fly. It's hooksize / 3 OR 4 = tippet So if you're fishing with a size 12 fly, you'd want a 3x or 4x tippet. It's based on fly size because the strength of the tippet affects the presentation, accuracy, and range of the cast. Too big of a tippet and it flies farther than your fly. Too small of a tippet and your flies will dunk into the water (or the back of your head) before your line extends out.
