In high school I took a bus to school. It was about a 45-50 minute ride. There was a small group of friends I made that we'd bring projects to school so we can work together on the ride. I'd bring crochet projects (using beanies or drawstring bags). Emily hand sewed ballet slippers (which was wild to watch her make) Mandolin made dolls from old socks. Candice knitted. Emmett made tail keychains from yarn and his girlfriend, Jules, took most of sophomore year making movable parts for a wolf costume. She'd do the sewing on the bus. It was pretty cool. Some of the best parts of high school 😊

Also something about pointing to your mustache to show your intended gender makes me crack up every time. I wore my first corset mockup all day yesterday to check the fit, and today I feel weird and sad without it :P

Thank you so much for this series and please do more! I am Hungarian with roots in Kolozsvar (romanian gypsy grandpa) and Bosnia (from dad's side) . I want to recreate/inspired clothes of my ancestors. I am also a 17th century reenactor (living in England and reenact the year of Civil War) I discovered that the bodice/vest is very similar of different nations and throughout centuries. Up until the 18th century not many things changed in shape.

I love the silliness! Regarding bras/corsets, in my experience people with larger breasts tend to prefer support, and people with smaller ones tend to prefer to go without, or simply hate wearing bras. That said, I know of exceptions to this “rule”.

I am *A MAN* and I really like wearing corsets because I have no reason to wear a bra but corsets and stays, if well tailored, support my back pretty well and prevent me from slouching. Also I personnaly feel really body conscious when wearing women's garment without any corsetery (even though I'm really not soft and corsets barely do anything without padding) :/

Thanks so much for making this video! I’ve been finding it super difficult to start researching folk costume, and it’s amazing to see someone present it in the costume KZbin format I’ve grown so fond of. Also I love your little skits! As for bras vs corsets vs folk vests, I’ve been using vests (some folk, not sure where from since thrifted) to hide and support my chest until I can get top surgery. It’s great to know that other people also used vests for support!! I find them much more comfortable and convenient than bras or binders.

Was that a Horrible Histories homage?! Loved it. Also, would much rather wear a corset than a bra for the support it gives, the nice hug feeling especially in these distancing times, the silhouette is so flattering, and the item itself can be so pretty. Since they aren't really socially acceptable I usually wear sports bras for a similar feel, but they don't give me the comforting exoskeleton I want.

Corsets are great. I made my own pair of stays a couple of months ago (which I had to adjust later, despite having made a mockup), and I love my stays so much! One day I will make another one. As for bras: part of the reason behind me making stays was that I wanted to have a bra-alternative. I would say that I'm somewhat of a medium size, some support is nice but I can go without. Especially the bra straps that *always* come of me shoulders are really upsetting. Usually I do wear bras though. (Due to some coincidence not right now...)

This vest turned out so beautiful ! I like how the broad black velvet area at the bottom and the tinier thin ribbons create a transition to the stripy wool area ! The advertisement - sketch is extremely funny ! I'm very convinced to give up my bra for a fitted vest ! I love vests for disguising and improving the appearance of the figure . Actually , I sewed a historical Venetian bodice ( after a commercial pattern ) with a lot of plastic zip - ties boning in the front but that's not necessary , one can get supporting layers by stitching layers together . I buy second hand dirndls and try to fit them to the upper part to my torso , wanted to slap on funny embellishments for fun ...

The traditional swedish folk costumes don’t use corsets or any type of bra either, at least the ones from the area where I grew up. There’s a sleeveless shift (which in some cases have a separate top front with darts but that might be a more modern construction), then a wrap blouse/shirt that supports the bust a bit, and over that a bodice/vest and a shawl to cover shoulders and chest. The bodice from my area is almost underbust and laced, so it also gives support if it fits right. For everyday wear or work wear, people would sometimes also use more vest-like garments with much higher necklines. If anyone is curious as to what these costumes look like you can image search ”Leksand folk costume” or ”Leksandsdrakt”. (Or ”Swedish folk costumes” I guess, but disregard the blue and yellow one, it is a much later construction). In Leksand, because of tradition, cultural interest and at least 150 years of tourism, people still wear the costumes sometimes for events, celebrations and graduations, especially village Midsummer celebrations, but usually the ”best”/sunday versions. I wore the costume a couple of summers for working at the open air home stead/village museum, and it is very comfortable.

Yay for no bras! I've found that I'm always more comfortable in folk clothes. You don't need a bra to achieve the silhouette and often they are more uncomfortable if you try to wear modern undergarments with them. I've made a couple of dirndls and am incorporating more historical silhouettes into my wardrobe. The back and breast support is just so much better. There's a reason bodice designs remained almost the same for centuries - they're practical and really comfortable. Definitely going to make myself a couple of vests now! (It's going into winter in Australia, so a warmer pattern is appreciated!)

Being the weird personage that I am, I watched these three video's in reverse. (I raised an eyebrow at your chiding, but continued to watch. hee hee hee) I found each one so funny and informative at the same time. It was enriching and wonderfully enjoyable. I am a no bra person, from being in an accident many years ago. Nor can I wear anything restricting my ribs, the pressure causes too much pain. If I try to lace myself up in a corset I have panic attacks. For me finding history full of non-restrictive peasant costumes was nothing short of a miracle. Not everyone bound themselves up in snug fitting garments. I used to do American Colonial Frontier historical re-enactments. All the other women dressed in corsets. Even tho the records clearly show, the frontier women didn't always wear them. I couldn't wear one, so after doing research on my Dutch ancestry, found that they too made loose fitting garments, from square's and rectangles. I made my costume after one of their styles and felt happy to be representing them, and their way of dress. I even bought a pair of wooden shoes. There are so many lovely historical garments out there to investigate. Which means there is always something out there perfectly suited to fit each persons taste's and needs. I love this vest! I have a slubbed silk suit jacket I think will upcycle very nicely into something like this. Now I wish I hadn't chucked my other wool jackets to Goodwill. Rats!

I either wear a tank top under my clothes or a sports bra. I only wear underwire bras if I'm getting dolled up for a wedding or something and the dress sits better with one.
@katherinemorelle71154 жыл бұрын
I’m a big proponent of corsets. I’m very large busted and need a lot of support, but bras only distribute the weight of my breasts on a very thin band around the ribs, and the shoulder straps. Which is actually very painful for me, as I have a degenerative spinal condition that affects my neck all the way to my bottom. But a corset distributes that weight evenly across my entire torso, and doesn’t pull on my shoulders or neck, because it lifts from the bottom. It’s also a really great back brace, which I need. So no to bras, yes to corsets and stays. I especially love the higher backed stays of the 18thC, as they give excellent upper back support. But the silhouette they give isn’t appropriate for all of my clothes, so I do also like a mid to late 19thC style corset, because it gives a more “natural” (for me at least) shape that doesn’t look out of place for even more modern clothing. And yes, we definitely need to bring corsetry back! One thing I’ve noticed is that boned longline bras are becoming more popular in the modern bra world, and I think this is a more modern way of having that same sort of comfort and back support. If I do wear a “modern” bra, it’s my 1940s style cross your heart unwired longline bra. It’s boned at the sides and back, and finishes right at my east, and gives pretty good mid-back support, and doesn’t hurt anywhere near as much as a normal underwire bra. The only issue is that it doesn’t provide lower back support, and that’s where the worst of my back pain is. If I want to sit up in my wheelchair for longer than 30-45 minutes, or if I want to go out, or if I want to do sewing at the machine, I wear a corset.

I hate bras! But since I am overly "blessed", I must wear one or I look fat and awful. Corsets are great and, when well fitted, are quite comfortable; they are also quite expensive. When I was younger (about 40 yrs younger), vests were instyle and I wore them w/o a bra -- my mother was mortified. I think I will have to try your best. That is, I will make one similar to yours for myself. (Why yes, I can draft my own patterns.) Thank you! I cannot wait to see more about vests.f

Also, I own a lot of cute bras, which cost a hell lot of money because I only like expensive shit (and I always need to buy them in stores that have a bra fitting service and a variety of sizes, because I don’t fit in standard sizes), it would be a waste to not wear them. I'm a corset person all the way. I have had 2 back surgeries and the modern braces I have are like wearing a car seat on my back. I hate them! But corsets give me the support I need for physical activity and are WAAAYYYYYY more comfortable. I actually had a very heated discussion with someone who said "you could never do my manual labor job in a corset" and I just couldn't make her realize that our ancestors literally ran farms and things wearing these garments! In America women seem to be very judgmental of women that don't wear a bra. I am not sure about what men think because I have never asked, I guess because I don't care what they think. I assume they have a preference - without bras. Women are different and I don't really know why I care what they think. Anyway that is another subject. I prefer to go without however, to curtail negative gossip I choose to wear a sports bra because they are more binding and therefore cuts the "jiggle" down. I am however in my late 60s so I am more inclined to wear jackets or sweaters when necessary for coverage. Love all your videos.

Hi Anna, when you are on the train (5:47) you have a fitted top / dress on. And I was wondering if you have made it yourself and if you can recommend the pattern? I love you video’s and your aesthetic.

Can you do a video about how you created your new bed. The one with the blue drapery? I'm dying to do my bed that way.

When I was younger, I felt like I had to wear a bra all the time, but in the last three years I have moved away from wearing them, and I generally only wear one when I go out, which for me is rarely, as I work from home and am a very isolated introvert who prefers my solitude. So, maybe twice a month I’ll put on a bra. Other than that I prefer to free the ta-tas.

I love your hairstyle in this video. Do you have a tutorial of it, or maybe you will make a tutorial og it in the future?

I'm 💯 a bra person but that's because I need a lot of support in the chest area. But, I do find the vest very interesting, especially since I could do with some back support, as well. I guess I'm off to esty 😆

I actually do enjoy wearing a bra, but if corsets came back in fashion I wouldn't be mad. In fact, I'm thinking of getting into 1940's vintage fashion and wearing a full figured waist cincher/breast and back support on a regular basis.
